MKV to AVI converter
-
Does anyone know of a free MKV to AVI conversion utility? I have a single file to convert, and all the free trials that I've found so far will only convert the first few minutes, before stopping and asking you to buy it. Like I said, I only have one file to convert, and I don't ever envision needing to convert anything from MKV again, so I don't really want to shell out for something I'm only going to use once. Thanks.

If you can put up with the forceful and absolutely awful user interface, go and get
Super
It's basically an interface for a load of command line tools and codecs (that conveniently come packaged with it). As far as functionality goes it's the only video / audio converter you'll ever need to install. The downside is that I can't stand to actually use it for more than 5 minutes, the interface is just that bad. And don't get me started on trying to actually find the download link from the website, if your up for a little challenge just try it: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html[^] Otherwise here's a more direct link: Linky[^] Download link is at the bottom EDIT: The dirty sods, they just redirect back to the main site. I dislike Super even more now.My current favourite word is: Delicious!

Good grief, that website is terrible. :omg: However, it does look like a fairly decent converter. It converts directly to .DPG for Nintendo DS too, so my son will be happy with that! Except... that it crashes immediately upon startup. Maybe it doesn't like running in a VM or something, but it's not a good start. :(

MKV and AVI are just containers for video, audio, etc. AVI may not necessarily support the streams you have in the MKV. Anyway, I suggest TSMuxer[^] for demuxing the MKV and VirtualDub[^] to mux the streams into an AVI container.

Have a rat through AfterDawn.com (sorry can't link from work) it has some excellent link, tutorials and discussions on all things of this nature. I ended up MKVtoVOB for a no brainer conversion.
