There are too many people ought there that need to be castrated. Child abuse is a sad and terrible thing. I do not think a death sentence is applicable in this case, I think they loved the child but were too damn stupid to be allowed to have one. Sterilisation for them, and the other children adopted by people who do know how to raise a child.

I'm always flabbergasted to see people can reach such a level of faith that it results in stupidity.

The judge was clearly of hte same ilk as the defendants themselves, carrying on as he did that maybe the defendants needed to consider that god worked his majick through doctors, etc, etc. I'm surprised the prosecution doesn't appeal the sentence.
Take a moment and think about what the judge said and he was not being stupid. The defendants had said they'd put their trust in God. The judge suggested that *maybe* God's *help* would be in the earthly form of a Doctor. So he basically said religion and sceince are not incompatible and that whatever you beleive, not calling for medical help was a completly stupid thing. That said, I think they should both be publicly flogged and the remaining children taken away.

The sentence, when taken together with the judge's statements (there was much more than the bit I poorly quoted), suggested to me that the judge held the same religious belief as the defendants, and it is an easy leap to make that this affected the sentence he handed down. Considering the fact that religious fanatacism was at the root of the crime, I found the judge's commiseration and validation of those very beliefs to be completely outrageous. Stoking the fires of their fanatacism was NOT what the court needed to do; it needed to stress the secular aspect of the law, not try to re-cast it in religious terms.

A very religious man is on a boat when it sinks. He grabs a life preserver and prays for God to come and help him. A few minutes later another boat draws up and tells the man to get in, but he refuses, saying that God will save him. An hour later, a helicopter flies by and tells the man to get in, but he refuses, saying that God will save him. Much later, the man is freezing to death, but keeps praying to God to save him, but eventually he succumbs to the freezing water and drowns. Upon his arrival in Heaven, he asks God why he didn't save him, to which God replies "Dude, I sent you a boat and a helicopter, what more do you want?"
