How to get Windows 7 - a saga

I recently (about 6 weeks ago) woke to an almighty crash, dived out of bed and raced around the appartment looking for the problem. Turns out the band holding the tower to the side of the desk decided to give up the ghost and dropped the box onto the floor. Amazingly the bloody thing still worked, all the bits inside were lightly canted to one angle as the poor thing has landed on one corner and the entire frame was warped. Well we moved house last weekend and the PC decided this was the last indignity and refused to start, wouldn't even power on. As I am a complete incompetant when it come to hardware I deemed this an excellent excuse to purchase a new machine. I have been wanting to go to a 64 bit OS for some time and Windows 7 sounds good. Off to the tech mall (Funan Centre) to annoy a number of sales people and amuse others and eventually (42 minutes, I hate shopping) I come away with a nice new Acer box, quad core, 1tb but only 4gb memory figuring I can fix that later. Oh yeah I got Office 2007 as well. Imagine my horror when I find Outlook is no longer part of Office, not only that but there is no 64 bit version available. Not that I'm a great fan of Outlook but it works for me and I have almost 2 decades of history in those .pst files. My other nasty surprise is when I attempt to install SQL Server developer version, the installer only wants to allow me the Enterprise (eval) or Express versions. Still nice shiny new box, love the OS and I now committed to a week of ratting around to get all my utilities etc from the net, all in 64 bit.

And I thought you were joking X| Try telling the wife she needs to change from outlook to thunderbird, there is a lot of :sigh: and quite a few :| . Ah well I think I'll take us off to some jazz in the park for the evening, maybe it won't rain.

Just had a look at the box - Home and Student, damn, dne again, I wonder if I can upgrade...
