A friend of mine is currently studying forensic computing at university in the UK. She is part way through her second year and is looking for a relevant internship / placement for the third year. It seems that the current economic climate has had a pretty disastrous effect on the number & variety of placements available and she is therefore having great difficulty securing anything relevant. Knowing that I work in the industry she asked me if I could help out. Well I'm a software developer for a web design company so I'm really not best qualified to give advice or direction in the security or forensics sector :( , but I thought that if any group of people would be able to point int the right direction it would be the inhabitants of the lounge. Any useful leads or advice greatfully accepted.

Dunno if it is within the range, nor if it is relevant, but have a look at ibas.no. //L

She needs to find the leads herself, it's her profession. :)

I guess with FC you're basically looking at two main areas - analysis for legal purposes or data recovery from damaged equipment etc. Law enforcement agencies, particularly specialised teams like the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) [locations[^]] could be good places to start. Failing that, a canvas of data recovery and forensics companies using google should find a decent enough list of suitable organisations that could be contacted and a nice letter sent asking if they support work placement schemes. I would have expected that the University would at least be able to provide a list of suitable companies that might be able to help - a department with no industry links would be a concern to say the least.

          It definitely isn't definatley

Yeah :-) It seems that over the last 12-18 months all the placement opportunities they would have been able to provide have dired up due to the recession. The upshot being that the students are now left in the position of fighting over the scraps & / or sorting stuff out for themselves.

Forensic computing in the UK usually involves working out who left the latest government database on a train or pub car-park.

If she wants to look into the security sector, then she should get in touch with companies like EADS[^] to see about their student placement programmes.
