In my case, age may also be a silent factor.
Funnily enough my company will not hire anyone under 30 to a senior position. They want people who have kids, families mortgages etc as they tend to be more committed and take less time off. Result? Productive staff that need less supervision. Save money all round!

Similar experience here. They wanted someone 'stable', i.e. less likely to bugger off in 6 months after doing bugger all.

Well, it's still a job. And you can work from home!

They all sound like great ideas and I will try them. Except for the one about trying to be the best candidate for the job, doesn't sound as intersting as the others.
Hey, the last one worked for me... Of course I am stuck in QA and phone support hell... Being an intern can have it's drawbacks. Good news is I have to take 40 hours of unpaid furlough.

don't know what it's like where you are, but where i am (Raleigh, NC), it's the worst i've seen in the whole 12 years i've lived here. get ready for a whole bunch of really tough technical screens and a ton of competition.
Did you eventually find a job you like in Raleigh?

It looks like I will be on the next unemployment statistic for the US. Just as quick question, does anyone have any great ideas on the job search in this market (Or lack of market) and what is the best way to go about it? I am in the east valley of Phoenix, AZ which was booming with jobs two years ago but seems to be as dried up as the weather today. Any advice would be better than no advice. :sigh:
I wish you luck. I would hate to look for a job right now as I do not interview or test well. Interviews I can do until the first question I cannot answer then its down hill fast. I being 54 have a strike against me walking in the door. Look into the local job agencies, Monster and Dice. There are a couple of others that I do not remember. Also I heard just last week that LinkedIn is a source managers use. Again Good Luck, djj

Why? As far as I know a experienced guy like you should be welcome in any company.

Yes to WPF, ASP.NET and good team player; no to moving to Kansas City. I just came to Phoenix two years ago.

For the next 12 months or so. Still have to fly back to Deerfield Beach a couple times for a contract there too.

I'm in a very similar situation, and it looks as if we're going to lose our house and property. We're going into foreclosure. This wasn't a sub-prime mortgage, either, but I had a heart attack, wiping out our savings, and now I can't find work, the value of the property has plunged by >60K and we can't sell it. :|
