SO what is a "Groundbreaking New Application" ... really? .. and anyone got one to share?

That's what they thought about land-lines before the mobile / cell phone was mass-produced. Then SMS was developed "so offices could contact staff without a pager"... That's what they thought about BBS before the t'interweb... That's what they thought about Telex, before Fax machines became obiquitous... That's what they thought about the computer - who was it that said the world wide demand was going to be about four? I could go on, but you get the idea. Just because you haven't thought of it yet, doesn't mean we haven't all missed such a simple, obvious idea that we will smack our own heads and go "why didn't I think of that?" when someone does!

Most of your examples are technologies, not applications; and they are dated, so aren't you just proving the "only improvements" statement? The recent applications that come to mind are mobile phone apps, and twitter! :)

I just recieved an email form a company who has a contest asking me for a "Groundbreaking New Application" for their device... which begs 2 questions... A: What really is groundbreaking anymore? B: Do you have One of "those" ideas (and could you implement it in under a month (Contest deadline)? ---Just curious... because the grounbreaking program I've been working on for the last 2 years is still laying on the ground in pieces... :-\

I also worked on a project for 2 years and it is still on the ground. My problem was that I didn't do market research before developing the application. It was good science but there wasn't a market for it in the condition it is in today. I need to re-brand it and try to market it again but I haven't had the time to do it yet because of other commitments. To turn out a groundbreaking app in a month just isn't going to happen.

And if you did, why not sell it instead?
Thats what I'm saying... ohh and I'm sorry for the long title. What I'm really curious about is what do them mean when they say: "Groundbreaking" It's not like ther is much room in the market.. many ideas that could be had, have been... now we are really just improving on what exists. Unless someone could write a program that is capable of turning my cell phone into a transformer at the click of a button.. now thats a groundbreaking program.

I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopesYeah my project is MASSIVE ... Depending on how you measure progress... I've come a long way ~=1G of code and counting... but it is a number of inter-related apps, used for data driven design(really data driven programming) so although the end result is not "up and Running" I have done a lot of things, and if I could get some "real" data to test run it(the final project) things would be going a lot smoother... but that is being developed concurrently so .. baby steps.

Hi Ely_Bob, My ability to hallucinate (and/or psychic power) is not strong enough today to conjure scenarios for the generic fits-everything word : "device." I agree with Brother Luc Patyn when he said, about most of the other posts on this topic : " Most of your examples are technologies, not applications" : imho there was very little, computation, language, and user-interface wise, that wasn't ground-broken by the early 1970's at Xerox Parc, and its later spin-offs, Adobe, ParcPlaceSystems (SmallTalk), etc. What leads to rapid-adoption relatively fast success mass-market products often "saluted" as ground-breaking is often the simple behind-the-scenes economies of scale of production, and the ability to manufacture key components which enable the devices to be sold at prices consumers can afford. Yet, complex vectors, can come together : the so-called "desktop publishing" bubble really depended on several factors : a break-through lower-cost laser print engine from Canon, Adobe's mastery of a page-description-language and vector as well as bit-map fonts, software innovation (from MacDraw to PageMaker), and certainly the marketing genius and vision of Steve Jobs as well as John Warnock,. Then there's the matter of cultural fads, trends, tastes, and their manipulation by companies, advertising agencies, legions of gadget-junkies (most of them gettting the latest toys for free) who report on and manufacture "buzz" for the endless appetites for novelty. Nothing I say here is intended in any way to imply any criticism of your own project, in which I wish you all success. best, Bill
"Many : not conversant with mathematical studies, imagine that because it [the Analytical Engine] is to give results in numerical notation, its processes must consequently be arithmetical, numerical, rather than algebraical and analytical. This is an error. The engine can arrange and combine numerical quantities as if they were letters or any other general symbols; and it fact it might bring out its results in algebraical notation, were provisions made accordingly." -Don't worry about insulting me.. can't happen. here is the origional link[^] for those of you who are more "groundbreaking" then I. And you got the point I was trying to make people are throwing arroud that word to often.. I feel like it is becoming that new buzz word. there are things out there that would be "Ground breaking" but they are not single applications or components they are paradigm shifts. or should I say reality checks. Current paradigm shift: Put as much streaming content into your web ad as possible. Reality check: there are many users out there who have "less then optimal" internet speeds, for whom the added content is a real headache. "Groundbreaking" solution: Build a browser that can filter Content size. i.e. if page has a 20MB background and it will take minutes to load just load a blank background. Current paradigm shift: When Designing Programs All computers have 1G of memory. Reality check: there are many users out there who are working on older computers(see rural parents), farmers, grandparents etc. or people on a budget (like me when I was in college) "Groundbreaking" solution: Build programs that are "Bare Bones" gradiated. let the program detect the memory, and choose nessicary features based either on user preference or desin tier. These things would be "Ground breaking" in that they make the application available to "Legacy" computers(yes I know that adds extra layers of testing). Programmers need to remember that although they usually target mainstreem users(who are 1-2 yrs behind "top of the line") ther are a lot of people who can't afford to buy a computer (or hardware upgrades) every couple of years. -case in point- my parents just recently spent $400 on a new computer... which is about the ammount that they spend on food for an entire month!.. this was manditory due to their previous computer becoming too old to check Load boards (trucking, freight) (think as simple of a html table as immaginable.. plus a few colors)(128 Mb, P4, USB 1.0, XPsp3 - 1996) the computer "works" however all the new software runs to slow (virtual memory hogs) .. yet the older stuff runs just fine. sorry it's late and I am a little punchy.

Depends what the device is. If it's a USB controlled pneumatic drill, it should be pretty easy to write a groundbreaking app for it. /ravi
