Canadian Consultant - Errors & Omissions Liability Insurance

I have a client who requires this in order for me to be listed as an approved vendor ... even though I'll be cosulting with little to no exposure to liability. Anyone have it ? Who did you get it from ? What are the premiums like ?
...cmk The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying. - John Carmack

My premiums in the United States are $1200 a year but require a $300 a year umbrella policy as well.
Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. A man said to the universe: "Sir I exist!" "However," replied the universe, "The fact has not created in me A sense of obligation." --Stephen Crane

Yup.

An insurance broker.

About $2,000 per year for my company, although we do other things in addition to software development (not sure if that causes the premiums to go up or down). Some of the key questions were: Do we export out of country? List of key clients. Total sales. Years in business. I first looked into getting professional liability and errors & ommisions insurance after only a couple of years in business. The premiums were double what they are now. I also found that the premiums were higher if I'd gone through local insurance companies rather than a broker. It turns out I wound up with the same policy through a broker (same insurer) but the premium is about 25% less than if I'd gone through a local insurance company. Cheers, Drew.

At least I was guessing in the right ballpark. I was estimating CAN$ 1500 - 2500/yr. I'm expecting a higher premium as a Canadian doing exclusive work a US client.

I was surprised too. The broker was so much better, too. They filled out the forms for me and then had me review them. The other companies just sent blank forms. Cheers, Drew.

I use State Farm and my agent does all my paperwork for me, I usually just have to do a signature every now and then. Only downside is State Farm makes it a nightmare to switch agents. (So bad they almost made the list ... and you should know about the list)

> blank forms That's where I'm at now. My agent passed along the forms for CreeChurch[^] It's kind of exasperating as it's for this one contract with very little exposure to risk. The forms don't really let me explain the situation properly.

:) I actually just looked up where the nearest State Farm agents are, they are the only site that advertised the insurance. Was going to head over and talk to them. My only concern is I don't have any other policy with them, that usually ends up causing grief. ... oh, I have a list ... companies are being added daily.

IF they make an issue of it, tell them that your dealing with them over this policy is their opportunity to demonstrate why you should switch your other policies over as they expire.
