Speaking of notebooks
-
I'd like to buy a new notebook. My requirements are : 1 - light 2 - able to be used as a dev machine 3 - light 4 - not heavy Seriously, I want a machine for a couple of things: 1 - I want to be able to wipe it and use it to do clean machine Windows 7 installer testing 2 - I want it to be light because I'd take it on US trips, and so I'd have to use it as a dev machine for 2 weeks at a time. So, I expect light to mean a bit slower, but I want it to be usable all the same. Recommendations ?

I'm getting one of those, but I need a computer, also.

I only read code that is properly formatted, adding PRE tags is the easiest way to obtain that.
[The QA section does it automatically now, I hope we soon get it on regular forums as well]

I have an HP TX2510us[^] It's a 12" touch screen tablet and really light weight. I'm not a big fan of HP, but haven't had too many problems with it, other than the usual Vista crap. Probably could run Win7. Actually, not sure you can even buy these anymore, and I'm sure there are way better machines out there. Not bad for a spontaneous Staples buy though.

You can buy a Dell Adamo from Microsoft Store. http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Dell-Adamo-Pearl/product/D0288FB9[^] Use coupon code "MSStore-PC-40%" and you will get 40% off. It is lightweight and reasonably powerful. You can upgrade the RAM yourself to 4GB.

A few months ago, I bought one much like this ($500 from NewEgg, 6 pounds, 2.2GHz Pentium Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, on board graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). Mine was 3GB RAM, Vista, and might have had some other minor variations (could have been an Acer, smaller HDD, graphics card was about the same). I use it for development sometimes... no complaints. I also use it to watch HD movies from iTunes, as my old desktop (Pentium 4) has problems with playing higher quality movies, so my laptop is actually better than my desktop in some respects.

Sony Vaio X. 650g. Wicked. Or, if it's a dev machine, Sony Vaio SX. A bit heavier - but not much and serious grunt

I can't find that one on Amazon. The ones I found were 6 lb. I was hoping for something in the 4 lb and under bracket. I like the one Rama linked to. It's $2500 in Oz. I am thinking of ordering something and having it waiting for me when I go over in March.

Haha, damn, you fixed the links before I could reply. Seems like Maunder himself was bit by the bug where the "Do not interpret HTML tags" checkbox gets checked automatically. That makes me a little bit happy. ;P

So job descriptions that make me laugh by saying "may involve lifting up to 25 pounds" must make you cringe heavily. ;P

Yep -and good that I was affected, too, because it makes it way easier to debug.

It's one thing to carry a 6 lb notebook into another room. It's another to have it strapped to your back, with hard drives, cameras, GPS, books, etc. during the 30 odd hours it takes me to get from DFW to Hobart.

OK, but it doesn't look like Amazon has those. I AM browsing at 56k ( I am over my 10 gig limit, thanks Apple for that ), so that is cramping my style a little.

I thought Sony was the root of all evil, or something like that. How can you patronize such bad, bad people? And yes, I looked at the crappy Flash pages, which only serves to reinforce my impression that clearly they're the spawn of the devil, or at the very least were covertly instrumental in the design and implementation of Clippy.
