Hi, I’m going to upgrade my PC after years... However, I do not have any idea on what hardware I’ve to pick up these days. Therefore, I thought that it might be rational to drop a line here on CP asking any suggesstion and/or comments on the following hardwares: 1. CPU 2. Mainboard 3. RAM Any help would be highly appreciated, Cheers M.Mousavi – Software architect [http://mehdi.biz]

Ram- go for at least 512 and live happily ever after :-D So far as CPU's- this is an issue I would also love some clarity on. Intel Pentium 4's seem to be the Rolls Royce of processors, yet AMD seem to get much better performance out of less GHz. Hopefully you get some posts here to help clear up this issue

The new Pentium 4 Northwood processors are cool but very expensive. A more economic choice would be an AMD Athlon XP processor. I personally prefer the AMD processor because it has 128k L1 cache whereas the Pentium processors have next to none. The RAM you get is pretty much determined by the brand of processor that you get. If you get AMD, you need DDR (or SDRAM in some cases) and if you get Pentium, you will need RAMBUS. This is what makes the Pentium setup so cool. RAMBUS is 3 to 4 times as fast as DDR. Also, the Pentium motherboard's FSB is 2 to 3 times as fast as an AMD's. Hope this helps you in your decision. Brad Jennings

http://www.tomshardware.com[^] has many, many reviews on different computer components. Sometimes they go into more depth than I need, but this is still a good source. The biggest question to decide is if you want a Pentium4 or an Athlon XP. From there, decisions on mobo and ram are easier. Personally, I like my Athlon (probably because the last Pentium I used was my P1-150Mhz) :-D

If you are going for a high performance machine, AMD offers better price/performance. RAM - 512M as standard Elaine (fluffy tigress emoticon) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
