I use Kaspersky. Which does cost money, haven't had any problems with it, although I'm not entirely sure if it is the best AV product out there. Avast is pretty good also, I might use that in the future...

I'm looking into avast! now, it seems to get a recommendation every time someone asks about AV software so it's at least worth a look I guess

now I am (temporarily) left without anti virus software. It was a really great move of AVG to make their new version extremely insanely slower-than-a-snail slow. Actually not just the program. It makes the entire computer slow. Unacceptable. And of course MSE doesn't run on my OS, because they just like to randomly mess around with XP x64 users. (such as requiring a hack to install any Live product - which then goes on to work 100% perfectly) So.. any AV recommendations?

I just reinstall Windows whenever my machine gets some nasty malware. Doesn't happen often though. I'd say go AV free and reinstall when necessary. If you make periodic images of your installation, that could make things go much faster. Actually, I keep a second partition with an extra installation of Windows, just in case shit hits the fan and I have to have a new install ready when one gets thrashed.

Would you say it's better than avast! or Kaspersky?

I switched from AVG to Avast for the same reason one year ago and I have not looked back again. Avast simply rocks!

            Yusuf May I help you?

Better? Hmm I really don't know but it sure is faster => less system resources. Anyway from like 10 difrent AVs I've used the fastest and smallest foot print seemed the MS one. I know you can't use it(I read about it). I'm just saying.

We moved to VIPRE[^] a while back, and it definitely takes less resources than AVG. Recommended.

Does it still have that serious performance regression when using p2p programs?

It might be just a bug. Might be an idea to keep an eye open to see if they release any follow-up updates, to fix it.

If you want it to be free (and don't mind to be annoyed by some ads) AVIRA is a good choice. Really system friendly in terms of used resources and it works properly. I'm happy though with MSE, but if it is a problem with your OS... X|
