Only a matter of time. I love how scfi-fi comes up with advanced things and then real life seems to catch up with it about 3-4 years later. Mind you even that gap is closing.
What about when they're not "advanced" things? Demolition Man: "Yes, the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library--" "Wait, he was PRESIDENT!?" Ten years later, we have the Governator...

Hey, I said the airborne cavalry was cool... It's just the rest of the movie that put me to sleep... The professor even spent almost an entire class talking about the scene where they used the cow being slaughtered to parallel what was happening to the man...

Just watched this old movie for the first time yesterday... I know it's supposed to be required viewing for all self-proclaimed geeks (Along with Blade Runner, which was much better), so I dutifully put in the two hours to subject my neurons to this incredibly dull film... Now I realize this movie was made several years before I was born... But come on... Were all movies that SLOW? More than a few times, when the characters were escaping from the city and seeing all of those "new" (old) things, and going on and on about how strange they were, I found myself saying out loud... "Ok, we get it, let's move on..." Sure, the different perspective is kind of interesting for a couple minutes, and I assume that it was new and revolutionary when it first came out... But it was just so painfully slow and drawn-out... Not as bad as "2001," but still... Ugh... Oh, and on a side note... First time I saw the main character, the first thing that went through my mind was, "Hello, Austin. I'm Basil Exposition, from British Intelligence." Fun little laugh...

There was a Woody Allen film (clearly some years ago) where they had a TV imbedded in the wall (WOW!) to indicate that they were part fo a futuristic society. It was still clearly a CRT but at the time, incredible!

Star Wars came out a year later and blew everyone socks off. (Star Wars played on more than one screen a multiplex theater near me in upstate New York for well over a year.) I forced myself to watch "2001" a few years ago on TCM. I'd forgotten how long the LSD scenes took and just how lame they were. A lot of really dull movies came out in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I never took drugs, but once commented to a friend who's about ten years older that you must have had to have been high to enjoy many of these borefests. He said that he was high and still didn't enjoy them.

Logan's Run was dull, Blade Runner was dismal. Paid to see them both when they came out, wouldn't watch either one again for free. And 2001 was simply excruciating (much like the first Star Trek). No, they weren't all this dull back then. My only guess is that these guys assumed the audience would be on the same drugs they were taking when they made them.

I could have told you that without having watched or read anything about it. Anything by P K Dick in specific or New Wave SF[^] in general is dreck containing nothing of merit and fit only to be hurled across the room with great force. Unless ofc you judge a story by the same standards as the people who choice of dreck for required school reading that drive students into the illiterotti by convincing them that reading a book is never an enjoyable experience.

I dunno... Tried to block out most of that course... Just remember something about Paris... Might have been an old silent film. They even made us watch Apocalypse Now... Another one that everyone thinks is so amazing, but I thought was incredibly dull.... Except for the airborne cavalry... The attack choppers blasting Flight of the Valkyries... That was just awesome.

You're not alone. I remember the previews for Apocalypse Now and all they showed was the attack chopper scene. When I saw it, I though I was going to see an action flick, not a naval gazing borefest. Was that disappointing. (I was so bored that even the attack chopper scene seemed awfully drawn out and not very exciting.)
