I know I could never be a billionaire for at least 2 reasons, so the rest don't matter: 1) After a few hundred million, who cares? 2) People in high places discriminate based on color: My nose is the wrong color.

Seriously Martin? You think every billionaire got that way by lying cheating and stealing? I would hazard a guess that being willing to work harder than the average person who thinks you have to steal or cheat or lie to get rich is one, more than average intelligence and most importantly to be driven on your own to sacrifice anything it takes should round out the top three the rest is probably all luck.

If only everything was as black and white as glib comments posted late at night on an internet forum :) Having said that, though, I was reading about Warren Buffet the other day - someone I have quite a lot of respect for and who seems to be relatively "clean" - and even he has some skeletons in the closet.

OK, assume a cleaner gets 6€/hour - that's already an the upper end in most places. Do you think someone can be really 10 times as productive? 20 times? OK, let's assume 100 times. Now, assume someone is 100 times as productive, is willing to work six days a week for 12 hours, without vacations. He made his first billion after only 445 years - without accounting for living cost or inflation. I agree that "every billionaire is a liar, cheater, stealer" is debatable. But "work harder" is a pipe dream at best, an insult to everyone who does work hard. Hard work makes the least money.

You're confusing this with the legal industry, probably from your experiences with the firm of Dewey, Cheatem and Howe.

Smarter needs to be combined with harder or else you get no where. When we started our business we worked harder than anyone else I know for many years and people would say "oh I wish I had my own business and could make money like you guys do" and the only thing stopping them was a semi good idea and a lot of hard work.

                          1. Do you care more about power than money? 2) Can you be ruthless and sleep well at night? Since I answer no to both, I'll never be a billionaire (as will nobody I personally know.)

Everybody can BE a billionaire - it is quite easy really. Not everybody has what it takes to BECOME a billionaire. Sloppy grammar! My own observation is that wealth concentrates around those that manipulate wealth, not produce it. People that farm, build, or mine will never earn as much as currency traders, stock brokers, lawyers (legal brokers), or their own bosses. However, to become a billionaire, you have to own a large business. To get there, the skills mentioned in the article are necessary but not sufficient. By analogy: buying a lottery ticket is necessary to winning the lottery. It does not mean that you will win the lottery. Kudos to Rama for having 8 of the 11 skills. Now just do your best and don't worry about where it will lead.

I would hope a programmer has a better grasp of logic and reasoning skills. My neighbour is worth tens of millions of dollars and he got that wealth from scratch, by being smart and hard working, and he definitely believes the system is not to help you. He's also into "conspiracy" stuff.
