Old MSDN CD failing - how to replace it?
-
I hope nobody takes this as a programming question. I periodically, more often than I like to, need to reload my old MSDN disks. I got two copies and they both are failing to install some files, at random. How can I remedy this? I fear that some day they may not install at all. Can I just copy them to disk and install from disk? ( I have not tried that – they always ask to insert CD anyway). I guess MS is not interested in supporting old stuff (2001) which works just fine for retried hobbyist playing with software and obviously I have no funds to buy a new set. Any constructive comments are appreciated. Thanks for reading. Vaclav

I think you can get the iso's of the older MSDN packages from msdn.microsoft.com. You may need an MSDN subscription, though. If you can get at them, just download the iso's and burn yourself a new disc.

I would suggest copying them to a hard drive as ISO files (there are a number of free programs that can do this: Magic iso & magic disk[^] come to mind (I've used both on XP and W7 without problems). Magic disk is a cd/dvd emulator that adds virtual drives so you an mount the disk image as if it were a real CD. the virtual drives read the ISO faster than a real CD, which is nice...
