It totally depends on the pitching. The Angels were dead in the water until they got 2 hits off Ortiz, then Baker panicked and brought in relievers, who promptly got knocked around for 6 runs. Looked to me that way too Washburn looked like he wanted to get hit in that 14-6 match. Just out of curiosity, why can't Fransisco Roderiguez or Weber start for Angels - they look much better. Is there any strategy involved here?
It all depends on the ability of the pitcher. A starter is expected to throw over 100 pitches and work 6+ innings, and keep good pitch control throughout. Anyone who can't do that is a reliever.
