That's a matter of preference. There is no absolute best.

      No.

And what's "C$"? Some language invented by M$ ? (Feel free to substitute for "invented")

The best place to start learning Java would be the Java Tutorials[^], for which you do not necessarily need an IDE, as most samples can be built with copy and paste using Notepad or any simple editor. In answer to your other questions: 1. Whichever you think is best. The most popular in current use are NetBeans[^] and Eclipse[^]. 2. No.

It's time for a new signature.

Not strictly true. You can use it, you just won't be hugely productive in it - especially as you won't be able to debug in it. Have a look at this[^] blog post.

Pete, Absolutely right, I use VS for coding Java, JavaScript, batch files etc. I just did not think it a good starting point for someone new to Java.

As said below Eclipse and Netbeans are the most popular. I couldn't say which is best. Jetbrains IntelliJ is highly rated but commercial - although they recently released a free community edition.

I guess his(her) meaning is that he(she) can use "C" language. And "C" is "expensive". So a dollar sign is added behind "C". :-D

There is some white cloud floating on the blue sky. That's the landscape I like.
