The British are the inhabitants of all the British Isles, as opposed to the Scots, who are the ones at the top, moaning!

After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, British scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in the UK newspapers read: "British archaeologists have found traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the Scots." One week later, "The Daily Squidjigger," a Newfoundland newspaper, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 meters near Cornerbrook, Wilf Johnson, a self taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Wilf has therefore concluded that 300 years ago Newfoundland had already gone wireless."

Britain had a WWW back in the 1800's, run from a shed in Lamorna Cove in Cornwall (I think). There was a whole series of Telegraph cables that ran out from London, to Bombay, New York, Sydney, Cape Town etc, and a message could be relayed from the Prime Minister in London to the Ambassadors, and replied to within a few minutes. Not bad for Victorian Technology.

I thought it might be like the Andy Murray syndrome. When he is doing well the press write something along the lines of "British tennis sensation destroys all in his path" but when he loses it becomes "Scottish tennis star underaacheives again!"

It is quite possible - there was a fax machine working in London in 1842, 35 years before the telephone was invented! I remember seeing it on Adam Hart Davies "Local Heroes" but there is a description here.[^]

Thought the last one was going to be that the phone company stating that the outages in the last few weeks have been regrettable. They keep burying the wire deeper but idiots keep digging it up! :-D

According to 411.ca, there is no Wilf Johnson in Cornerbrook. See here[^]. Actually I'd be surpised if there is anybody named Wilf in Newfoundland. Will, Willy, William, but Wilf?
