How many of you have lost your vermiform appendix? I had emergency surgery in the 4th grade to have mine removed. I still feel empty on the inside... Are you empty too?

Only thing I've lost is a couple of wisdom teeth late last year.

    Yes, but that's because it's 0800 and it's time for breakfast. :)

Cheers, Vikram. (Got my troika of CCCs!)

Mine exploded 2 years ago, and was vacuumed out. It turned out to have a rare form of cancer on it, one that can't be detected until it's inoperable, so it probably saved my life. For now... And no, I don't feel empty - I feel intense pressure all the time since, as a precautionary measure, they opened me up again a week later to remove a foot of colon, just in case. No sign of cancer, but the operation seems to have bunged up my internals permanently. Oh well, pain tells me I'm still alive. I'm probably lucky, at that.

Long gone since I was 5 years old and it ruptured and they didn't know what was wrong with me until a surgeon came in an figured it out and immediately sent me in for surgery. My skin turned all black and I nearly died from the rupture. Spent a month in the hospital recovering. The worst thing about that was they put frozen veggies in my jello for some reason, yuck! I still remember that giant block of orange jello with the little cut up bits of beans and peas and carrots embedded in it. I just read the other day that there is a new theory that the appendix is not actually useless at all but is a reservoir for friendly symbiotic bacteria to repopulate your gut when they get wiped out from illness or various other events. I haven't had mine for many decades now and haven't noticed a lack, just scars on both sides because apparently not only were they crap at diagnosing it they were crap at knowing which side it was on as well. :)

I've heard of surgeries around that area which use two or more incisions so surgeons can come in from multiple angles. Not sure if that was true in your case.

I have a little one on the left side and a big one on the right side. My appendix did burst though so maybe they had a vacuum sucker going on one side and the main surgery on the other side. This was a crappy hospital though anything was possible there in those days. One day my parents came in to visit me and there was blood all over my arm, my bed and on the floor and it was half dried it had been there so long. The nurse claimed that they had "had trouble" changing my IV but no explanation for why it was left that way. That incident though did result in me getting a free tv and a private room after my dad nearly took the roof off the building over it. :)

My guess is the camera went in that one. Or maybe a suction tool.

I'd totaly sit in my own blood for a short while to get some free TV. ;P

I don't know if they had them back in '73 :) Probably a sucker.

Yeah, especially when I was comatose and didn't know about it. :)

Still got my appendix. Mind you, I have lost my bibliography, and I damaged my index finger. On a more serious note, I don't have a gall bladder; the bile of that doctor.

Mine was removed some 50 years ago when I had to be opened up for something else. They thought that whilst they were in there they might just as well whip it out even though there was nothing wrong with it. At the time it was widely believed that it was useless. Now, as others have said, 'they' believe it has a purpose. Which is why I rarely believe scientists. :-D

If you don't mind my asking, how? Mine's been misshapen at the tip since a sledge hammer accident when I was 8.

Mine went blooey 8 years ago. Didn't realize it for 5 days. 8 days in the hospital, and a cool scar to show for it.
