Error 43

Yeah, that's what I thought too. X| My Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX stroked out Friday night after working fine for almost 2 years. All attempts to revive it failed, including new drivers, up to a full Win7 reinstall. From the various Google results, it seems terminal, and I need a new card. Any suggestions for a HD-capable 3D video card >= my old one? Preferably < $500.
I need an app that will automatically deliver a new BBBBBBBBaBB (beautiful blonde bimbo brandishing bountiful bobbing bare breasts and bodacious butt) every day. John Simmons / outlaw programmer

Hey one of my Nvidia 9800GTX's failed last Friday as well (fortunately I have 2 so I can still go on working :) ) It's the second time this happens tho (had to replace the other one withing 2 months of purchasing it) Check your warranty you might still be within the period (I am and my card is closing in on the 2 year mark as well so... )

At the moment, in any review I read, the ATI 5700/5800 series cards seem to outperform the nearest equiv NVidia cards. I'm sure NVid will turn the tables with their next series, but at the moment it looks like ATI. ATI 5000 series[^]. This is purely from reading reviews, I have no personal experience. In fact I haven't used an ATI card since Win95.

I was reading about the Nvidia 480, and only the (> $600) ATI 5970 beats it in benchmarks. I haven't used ATI since they dropped All-In-Wonder cards.

I haven't seen a review of the 480 but from what you say and given that it is available for the right price, it sounds like that should be your choice. [Edit] After reading your message I did a search for the 480. The only really serious criticisms seem to be that it gets very, very hot. Far hotter than the 5870 and 5890 (but it does beat their FPS scores mostly). One review also said that the first production batch didn't actually have the full complement of 512 cores, as promised, because the production cannot currently produce enough of that part reliably (only saw that in one review though here[^]. Quote from a convo with a friend a few hrs prior to this post. " When Crysis was released, the 8800 was a good card, with the top model peaking around 620Gigaflops. F*** that, 5970 does 5,440 in its sleep " I vote ATI. Nvidia stopped being cool a while back, which was just after the 9800GTX was released. 8800GT and 9800GTX have been their only good cards in years. Kinda like Intel actually..

Don't you just love error 43? So helpful and informative. "Windows has not started this device because it reported an error". Gee, thanks. I had this a couple of weeks ago on my laptop's Nvidia 8600M, but the screen still works at default resolution using the standard Win 7 VGA driver (VGAPNP.SYS). The laptop, of course, was just a few months out of warranty. :(( It would probably cost more to repair (BGA mounting) than to replace the laptop, so I shall struggle on for a bit as it is - everything works fine at 1440 by 900 - I just don't have the eye candy, and I can't play videos - no hardware acceleration. I have connected the second screen via USB. I.m just glad that VS2008 doesn't need H/W acceleration. :sigh:
