So, I turned 25 yesterday and gave up smoking as birthday gift to my self. I haven't had a fag for quite a longer time(over 30 hours). Any quitters with some tips? Right now I am really desperate to get a fag.

I've been a health freak for some time now. Rewinding my life back to a few years, I and my gym partner started working out together. Back then, he had better power, agility and muscular build than me. We worked out together for about 14 months, and I became better than him. That's despite the fact that his diet was better than mine (he's a non vegetarian, so he gets excellent quality protein from meat and eggs, while I had to eat whey protein like a wimp). By around 18 months, I was far superior to him and he chose a different partner because he couldn't keep with me. :) The only difference between me and him was that he was a smoker. Just give it up, man. It's a VERY bad habit and it spoils your health more than you think it does.

    Current arm size: 14.4in
    Desired arm size: 18in

What about those back aches you got while picking up mammoth weights? Any habit that harms your health (mental/physical etc) is bad.

The disc is normal now (see sig) and I've started working out. That happened not because of lifting mammoth weights, but because the equipment failed (and my posture was slightly wrong, adding up fuel to the fire) and the weights came against my spine.

Exercise improved my metabolism permanently. My health is above average, and I can run a fookin' marathon (I'll be one of the few who will fly to Mumbai in 2011 for running in Mumbai marathon on behalf of my company!). I think working out is a good habit.

I am a smoker for past 7 years. I really do not feel like smoking but also don't feel like giving it up. I am trying hard to give it up (with a really heavy head).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I really enjoyed smoking, too. But after the first couple of weeks, it was definitely worth quitting.

That is a very good example. Real incentive for a smoker to give it up.

No. I don't think this comparison holds true - what if his gym partner was a lady? :)

The problem with me is that I am a sports freak. I played football and volleyball regularly. Precisely, I played volleyball almost everyday for 10 years and football every Sunday for almost 10 years. This means I was in a pretty good shape. For the last three of those 10, I was smoking. I still don't "feel"* the harms of smoking, which is bad. * I know it is harming but comparatively, I am better than those book worms turned always in office kind of guys.

Same applies. I was actually paraphrasing a famous quote list here[^]. Either read/scroll/search down till you come to the one from Rudyard Kipling.

That's the problem with smoking. You won't realise the damage until it's too late. The damage is internal, and the organs being damaged are still going to continue to work, but they'll some day "just give up" and you can't replace a lung or heart. I'm not a bookworm either, but you don't have to smoke not to be a bookworm. It would be stupid to believe that smoking makes you a "cool" guy. I think is a way for yourself to feel that you are not an addict and you're smoking to be cool. Most smokers I know are addicts, but some just don't realise it. And since you've gifted yourself this on a birthday, be honest to yourself and don't fool yourself around. If you can't respect yourself (and your body), who else will? :) You'd know what bad health is like, if you lie on a bed for a month or so with a ruptured lumbar spinal disc only to get off the bed to eat and crap. That was my case, but smoking damages those organs that are even more vital. Good health is a great gift, and don't screw around with it giving lame excuses. And if you're addicted, accept that and put yourself in a strict course to get out of it.

I thought I would keep some scotch as replacement for the Sunday. Now I have had it and I need a fag. I will be using cashews as replacement from tomorrow. I am really glad that I am finally thinking to give up on this shit.

My father is a chain smoker & vocational drinker Now he is sick, when i was little(around 10) my mom requested me "you should never smoke or drink in your lifetime otherwise mom become alone". Her words made me good one not like my dad. Now i'm 24 & still following her words & first of all i mostly dislike these things. I don't want make her sad.

I've been to more funerals because of smoking than anything else.

I am a smoker for past 7 years. I really do not feel like smoking but also don't feel like giving it up. I am trying hard to give it up (with a really heavy head).

I'm the same, want to stop, but don't want to stop. The difference is, i can happily go days without one, last week when i wasn't feeling to great, i never had one for 6 days. i had 1 yesterday and haven't had one today. Breaking the routine is the key in my opinion. I used to have one with a cup of tea after my breakfast offshore, before i went through to my office. Last trip i broke that cycle. At home i usually have one with a can of Red Bull just to kickstart the day, and that would usually be the only one of the day, if i wasn't going anywhere or doing anything. The biggest problem is at home...........introduce beer and its game over, especially when the weather is fine, and you happily go outside and sit in the sun.

So, I turned 25 yesterday and gave up smoking as birthday gift to my self. I haven't had a fag for quite a longer time(over 30 hours). Any quitters with some tips? Right now I am really desperate to get a fag.

GOOD FOR YOU! I smoked a pack and a half a day for years. I quit smoking January 1, 1991. I quit 'cold turkey', with no patches, hypnosis, or drugs. I realized very quickly that if I ever smoked another cigarrette, I would begin a never-ending cycle of quitting and relapsing. Suggestions: 1. Drink lots of water and/or fruit juice. 2. Toss out all of the ash trays, lighters, and other paraphernalia. 3. Clean and vacuum the car. If you can, get it detailed where they will clean the upholstery. 4. Stay away from your old hangouts where you smoked. The physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal fade in 7-10 days. The mental withdrawal takes a lot longer, I'm afraid. In my case, I substituted a positive addiction for a negative one: I became a runner. I now run 15-20 miles a week. I'm old, fat, and slow, but at least I don't wheeze going up and down steps. The dumbest fucking thing I ever did in my life was start smoking, and quitting was one of the smartest.
