    So, I turned 25 yesterday and gave up smoking as birthday gift to my self. I haven't had a fag for quite a longer time(over 30 hours). Any quitters with some tips? Right now I am really desperate to get a fag.

    Take a puff of that golden tobacco leaf. Imagine the soothing flow of tingling sensations of that uplifting smoke and the very real satisfaction it gives you seconds after. The fresh smell of a newly opened pack of cigarettes, packing them down, pulling one out, and sparking it up. Breath in, breath out, ahhhhh... In all seriousness, try Swedish snus.

        On Friday it will be a year since I stopped. I was 32 then and started when I was 15. I dont know how much of an incentive it is but waking up in the morning, not coughing and not rushing outside to have a ciggy is fantastic.

            Alcohol is about the worst thing you can do, at least for me that would be the case. I always smoke more when drinking so... Best thing is keep your mind busy and away from thinking about it.

            I lived in a rural village when i gave up smoking, having a drink meant I couldn't drive which meant no access to cigarettes

                I read Allen Carr's Only way to give up smoking and found it to be excellent. The book comes over as a bit 'Salesspeak' and slightly patronising but it worked for me. I know people who swear by it but also people who swear at it so not sure whether you'd like it. It cost the same as a pack of rolling baccy though so worth a go. Rather than being a guide to giving up smoking the book helped me to see smoking for what it really was and after that it was very easy to give up the smokes.

                  I always thought that sport made you feel like your lungs were falling out and that's how it was. I'm still amazed when I play squash that I don't even notice my breathing unless a point is especially hard these days. These days when I catch a cold I still don't cough as much as I used to in the day.

                    When I gave up smoking a little over 2 years ago I was able to do so without even looking back. Things I found key were to firstly have a reason to quit. Secondly have an intent to do it and not look back. Thirdly have something to blame it on and then remove the blameable object. So, my 3 items were: 1. Stable relationship with Girlfriend. 2. Girlfriend really pressuring me to quit or else leave me. (My intent was to not let this happen) 3. Stressful interim job.

                      my personal technique: - have a packet with 1 cig left in it, this will prevent your brain from reminding you you dont have any ciggs, which would make you want one even more - keep the packet in the back of a drawer - place a large chocolate chip cookie at the front of the drawer, whenever you reach for the cigg your hand will find the cookie and you eat that instead of smoking The worst thing for me was all the adverts on tv for quitting aids, I was generally fine, not thinking about smoking at all and as soon as one of those ads came on i was munching on my cookie like I had major munchies.. call me a cynic but considering these companies make money from people who need help quitting it is actually in their interest to make it harder to quit .. thus i believe these ads to be a deliberate sabotage of any attempt to quit unaided

                        GOOD FOR YOU! I smoked a pack and a half a day for years. I quit smoking January 1, 1991. I quit 'cold turkey', with no patches, hypnosis, or drugs. I realized very quickly that if I ever smoked another cigarrette, I would begin a never-ending cycle of quitting and relapsing. Suggestions: 1. Drink lots of water and/or fruit juice. 2. Toss out all of the ash trays, lighters, and other paraphernalia. 3. Clean and vacuum the car. If you can, get it detailed where they will clean the upholstery. 4. Stay away from your old hangouts where you smoked. The physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal fade in 7-10 days. The mental withdrawal takes a lot longer, I'm afraid. In my case, I substituted a positive addiction for a negative one: I became a runner. I now run 15-20 miles a week. I'm old, fat, and slow, but at least I don't wheeze going up and down steps. The dumbest fucking thing I ever did in my life was start smoking, and quitting was one of the smartest.

                        Yes. That is why I am not going for reducing gradually. I just stopped it.

                        That's nice. I has started going gym some time back and did 2 KM run, 2.5 KM cycling daily. It was too hard initial couple of days but soon I got hold of it. I am planning to start going gym again.

                              If you ask me, it's all in your mind. Our brain is the most powerful thing and you must remember that you are the master. But controlling your mind is one of the hardest things to do. So, a few suggestions for "No Smoking" :) - You must NOT smoke for at least a week. The want will gradually start fading after that. After a few days thoughts like 'I haven't smoked for quite some time, lets smoke one cig as I am quite confident I can quit now' will come to your mind especially if you are with smoker friends. DO NOT SMOKE. If you can avoid these situations, you will soon be able to quit permanently. - Another important thing is to keep yourself busy. That will keep smoking thoughts away. Hope your step towards becoming a non-smoker be successful. :-O
