We've had the need to bring updates to the off-internet internal only network... We've done the manual bit, very annoying.... It is an action item that has been completely ignored for lack of time to research it and the only recent exit of someone who didn't believe in automation of anything, the "modern way" is to assign a lowered pay tech to do it all by hand.... Now that he's gone, I just haven't had time to think about this and then the answer lands in my lap yesterday.... After JSOP's thread and the answer, I installed Windows2008R2x64 server in a virtual machine with 3Gig of memory (which seems to be about minimum for this) using my Windows7 Ultimate x64 Desktop. The server is 10.7gig through synchronizing with Windows update and has all critical and security updates for the Operating Systems and Office/Development software we use just over night. I am now synchronizing with some optional stuff. :) So far it seems to be working like a charm. When it's done I am going to switch it over to the internal network and start setting up everyone to use it. Then I will simply move it back and forth on occasion to our internet line and synchronize it. All in all a very useful day yesterday in fixing not only bugs and doing efficiency timing, but also fixing something that was on the end of our todo list because we didn't even know what to ask or who, and only recently wouldn't get argued down from the attempt. :) Thanks Code Project!

WSUS is "it just works" technology, nothing short of amazing, really. And it was vital for a 15 PC office behind a 128kbit line (if you follow the "computers should be patched" camp).

I guess I'm going to have to do this myself (server in a VM). Ya know, details regarding what you did and how you did it would make a great article.

ya know, rules.... forums and blogs have limited access for publishing, more than they did a few years ago... but writing an article still falls under "publishing" and if I could guarantee no one from outside the US borders would read it, there would be no problems.... I told them once that if I write something that is no secret to anyone... their response, logically was, "then you have no need to write about it." :-D Logical to the end. :-D This is a great example. I can post this to a forum, because I got the answer from that exact same forum. But if I write an article about the process, I would not be allowed to show it to anyone, even though it is a process that is familiar to many people, and other articles by other people can be pieced together to achieve the same result. You are welcome to write the article and add it to your collection, but I fear I will forever be article-less. :-D

I heartily concur! Our IT service just spent two frustrating weeks trying to install Win2k8 SBS in our office and get everyone transferred over. They used, step-by-step, Microsoft's process for this and, as always, it was dead wrong. Fortunately, they're apparently rich enough to pay for MS supoort, and several midnight screaming matches later with inexperienced, less than helpful Microsoft support techs, finally got things working today. Perhaps the VM approach should have been tried. I'd definitely like to see that article written and published - just for my curiosity, of course. There's no way I want to go back into the support field! X|
