The latest Code Project newsletter had a link to How does one become the "Apple of [insert industry here]"?. (link[^]) The company that released a next gen phone that loses reception when you touch it. The company that is being investigated by the FBI for massive security breaches. The company that released a phone and completely failed with their preordering system. The company that has released, on average, 20 critical security patches a week for the last 5 months. (And finally relented, now shipping[^] with antimalware software) The company that yet again is being investigated for antitrust issues by the FTC. G4 and the 8GB iPod range were their last good product releases, since then they've gone downhill imo. Definitely not the to-emulate type.

The reception issue is hilarious, and their official line on it: "don't hold it that way". What, you mean like a phone?

My wife is (mostly) enjoying her used iPhone (2 generations back now). We are in no rush to get the 'latest and greatest'; for us, if it works, use it until it doesn't. TIm

Thier followup response is "we sell a bumper for 29$ so the metal parts aren't exposed" I can see thier next ad comming soon... for 400$ you can have the newest iPhone...for 430$ you can have one that works.
It gets worse! 1. Yellow screens 2. Reception issues 3. Fresh problem, some of the new iPhones have their volume up and volume down buttons the wrong way around!!!  I reckon #2 will be advertised as a feature, iFleshAttenuator!

Every company has some issues and Apple is no exception.

I will think of it as a nice problem to have. :) Demand better than expected.

Were they the last Apple products you bought? Form + Function has what made Apple so successful. I think this will be the key in the next few years for successful companies.

Nah. Some sites are reporting stats like 20 stores with 4 iPhones between them. If demand was for 10, then sure. But their system just wasn't capable of dealing with more than 1 person an hour going by reports. And really, for a company that knows it's the greatest thing since the Atari..

No. :( They're both on my wishlist, but student budget means buy products that work instead of luxuries. I have a Sony 2GB mp3 player for example, flash memory, small and well built means I can jump on a pushbike, go for a run, etc, and the player will surive getting knocked around, rained on, covered in mud and then landed on as I find a puddle that's around 20cm deeper than expected and still work. iPod isn't quite as durable. :P

Not really.. What's made Apple successful is that they can pull off stunts like selling a bumper for the phone to work and their customers will still think Apple loves them personally. They don't have a customer base, they have a fan base. Other companies do the same thing as Apple beforehand, and they fail, Apple does it and it works. They marketed themselves better than any other company on this planet ever has. And it works. Form + Function = win. Form + Function + Reputation = secret to being the biggest company in.. Anything really.
