I've just started playing Quake Live[^] again, but now I'm faced with a bit of an issue. When you go to quakelive.com, the page attempts to start the Quake Live plugin, which requires the browser to be run as administrator, otherwise it will fail to start the plugin. Now, I don't want to close the browser every time I want to play and then run it as admin, so I was wondering if there was some sort of feature that allows me to make Firefox remember the page and give it permission to start the plugin? I've googled for something like 'trusted sites firefox', but this doesn't provide the feature I'm looking for. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This wouldn't be a setting in Firefox. It's Windows that's requiring admin permissions. So running the browser "as admin" is your only recourse.

Time will tell whether or not that's a good idea. I imagine the "not" will win.

You could try this 'workaround' :) 1. Create a shortcut to the browser on the Desktop. 2. Right Click on the shortcut -> Propeties -> Put the URL in the 'Target' box next to the browser program name. 3.Click the 'Advanced' button on the same tab and select 'Run as different user' (or is it 'Run with different credentials'?) I don't know if you can make windows remember the admin credentials or if you have to type it in every time, but this is the closest I can think to a solution. Hope it helps!

If you need a hammer get C and shut up. If you need a nail gun get C++ and shut up. If you don't need *those* things (and good design should tell you) then by all means get a factory, factory, factory. --code-frog Why would you need to date, when C++ is your soul mate?! --Steve Echols

I guess that's the best solution for now. Though it is still annoying I have to open a new browser window as administrator. I was hoping there was some sort of setting that allowed me to say 'This plugin is OK, run it every time!'

And there must be some hackers in CP, too, who want everyone to run Internet browsers with admin permissions, so they can take over your entire machine, not just rip e-mail addresses and account details. Me, I don't let people with java, javascript, activeX, PDF, or Flash on their web pages get anywhere near anything with admin permissions. People really should think about what they're saying with a downvote.

I upvoted your post to counter the downvote(s). But yes, I agree that running the browser as administrator is a bad idea, that's why I was looking for a better solution to this. As long as I just use it for playing Quake Live, I guess everything will be fine, but it still annoys me that I have to open a new window every time I want to play, instead of just being able to go to quakelive.com, load the plugin, and start playing right away.

I think the trouble with adding a "Open window/tab/site with administrative permissions" option (similar to privacy tabs) is that people will use them a lot, putting their machines in unnecessary risk. Can't you sandbox the browser altogether? Or does it need to do *dangerous* things like write to the registry?

No, in fact I think the only thing that requires administrator permissions in this case, is starting the plugin itself. I mean, when I go to quakelive.com, it says 'Loading plugin...' and then gets stuck at 'Starting plugin...' It's just weird that Windows UAC doesn't display a warning, and give me an option to either allow this or not.

I hate to say this, but I've just installed it, and it works for me. I'm using IE, because the useless sh1tbags insist that IE and Firefox are the only browsers that it will work in. After a couple of "do you really want to let it do this?" questions, it all just worked. Maybe a reinstall.repair would help.

Have you tested if it also works in Firefox? I just reinstalled, and the same thing happens. I even have to run Firefox with administrator permissions to finish the setup.
