Because $180 for a 512mb stick is a little steep. Because the PC2100 RAM was only $25 cheaper (but I could uused three sticks on the MB), and the only PC3200 RAM was almost $50 more (and I could only use one stick on the mobo - a limitation of the mobo bios?).
