Daily google thoughtful interlude... Because of Christopher Duncan's messages about 64bit and 32bit I was going through another thoughtful phase.... PAE, AWE, EM64T... I know, bad to think where I work. I cannot live and breath without daily acronyms. A project can't get funded without an Acronym at least 3 letters long. I was trying to think back to when this first began. Acronyms were already widely accepted when I started work. IBM the best known. When I came here, nothing existed without acronyms.... how did we do this? Why did we do this? I googled.... :) 1965: COMNAVSEACOMBATSYSENGSTA = "Commander, Naval Sea Systems Combat Engineering Station" ADCOMSUBORDCOMPHIBSPAC = "Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet Subordinate Command." you can sure understand why you'd prefer an acronym to that mouthful.... Today: C4ISR = "Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance" We now return you to your regularly scheduled program with Christopher pondering to 64bit or not to 64bit.... "Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous 32bit limits or to take RAM against a sea of applications...."

    CP...Code Project. You are right.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

Acronyms of daily use. Like a.m. and p.m., do you mean?

DoD loves acronyms! My favorite was SFIR, a device used in the Peacekeeper missile guidance unit. I think it stood for "Specific Force Integrator - Rate" but no one was really sure and we all just called it the "siffer." When we learned that the contractor just used the equivalent unit from Minuteman, the SFIR was from then on known as the "Same F'ing Instrument, Renamed." :)
