Thousands of plants not known to exist face extinction!

and yet there are those who will simply accept that, because they have some 'ologies' they must be correct. I'd love to see the science behind estimating the unknown and then multiplying it by a number designed to illicit panic amongst those that latch onto any old crap. Oh yes, there are x species now and we know that there were y species until horrid man came and eat them all so there must be y-x*y^pi*666^e left to find that might, just might, already be in danger.

There you go![^] Note that the study is not designed to illicit (or, more likely, elicit ;P ) panic, but is an attempt to [estimate] how many such species there are [as] an essential step in setting conservation priorities.

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek though it is all still just a guesstimate. ;P

It is a statistical extrapolation of the genetic variability within flora phylums. It is also true that if you want to discover a new species of beetle you need only visit your garden.

Within as in whithin the branches emenating from any phylum or within as in between different phylums?

The joys of statistics. You think this is bad, go read over some of the 'statistical proofs evolution is impossible'. At least this here they have some small basis to work off of other than assumptions. One of the reasons I decided to go with computing rather than the sciences, somewhere between lies, damn lies and statistics I got lost and thought I would be able to actually prove something of consequence. So I went with something that has physical components and real limitations instead.

Oh, I agree. They go to all the trouble of building a mathematical model, and then ask experts for estimates against which to assess its performance. That is what I find funny.

If a species gets wiped out and there is nobody there to witness neither its existence nor its extinction, did this species exist at all?
