From http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/08/02/10-things-microsoft-can-do-to-make-a-real-tablet-platform/[^] Use the Zune interface I fully agree. The Zune interface does rock. Ignore Windows 7 I hear Rocky Moore screaming. As long as there is an efficient lightweight Tablet OS supporting SilverLight, it will rock on the Tablet. Create a skunkworks separate from the main company Politics is the number one problem in big companies. I think this is where MS will fail. Hire Apple engineers Could not agree more! Ideally, some with the design flair of Steve Jobs should be head of such a department. Make it cheap A good tablet for $400 will probably kill all the competition. But my hopes are pretty low that MS will come up with a good tablet in the near future. I think they already have the technology (SilverLight) which is well suited for Tablets and small devices.

MS is in the OS-as-a-platform business. Apple is in the appliance business. MS needs to do some rejiggering of their OS offerings to allow developers to develop completely new user experiences, from the desktop on up, on top of windows, kind of like Linux allows. Once they do that, then someone can use windows to create an appliance that addresses a particular subset of the marketplace. Until that can happen, a tablet PC from MS will still try to be a bit too general to be optimal for anything.
