The odd thing. When I modified the post, it linked back to the post I thought I'd replied against. I suspect forum links shenanigans.

A mantra that I hear from several people of my own age, "why don't they do something productive? When I was their age, I didn't hang around on street corners. Why, I was actively involved in sports and the local church and rescuing kittens from trees and helping little old ladies to cross the street whether they wanted to or not." What you never hear is "why, when I was a teenager I spent most of my time trying to chat up girls and being too scared to speak to them if they looked at me, and hanging around at the park until late because we were bored and had nothing to do."

I would never have done such a thing as a teenager! I went to the pub to be bored ...

Well they are aren't they? Only kidding - I know several talented Indian programmers, as well as several not so talented ones. Equally, for every talented English programmer I know, I know 5 or 6 morons of the highest order. All generalisations are counter productive.

I'm a male, British teenager. According to the Daily Mail, I should have fifty children, all by different girlfriends. I should apparently have every STD known to the human race, and be actively spreading it around. I should be out drinking every night, dealing drugs to my parents and friends, and swearing at every other person as I break into their houses and take their heirlooms back to my council house which I got from my unemployment benefits. I'm not, none of my friends are, and I hope that tells you everything you need to know about the Daily Mail's view of teenagers.

And yet for all the faults of a minority of my age group, you're the one tarring nearly a quarter of the population of the United Kingdom with the same brush. Perhaps it's time for you to re-evalute your perspective on who the pathetic ones are here.

Well said, and better written than the Mail article.

Thanks. Topics like these tend to really annoy me, to the extent I sometimes have to calm down and think about what I'm writing. The problem I have with viewpoints like the original poster's is that a lot of teenagers who I've met think that most adults hold them. At best, that's breeding resentment between generations; at worst, it's reader-sanctioned ageism. If any newspaper published a steady stream of articles about how the elderly were acting as parasites on the NHS, there'd be an uproar - and rightly so. It would appear though, that it's quite all right for similarly derogatory articles to be published regarding teenagers.

Funny how it's always the right wing that finds sectors of society to blame for everything, isn't it? During the Thatcher years, the great evils in society were the monsters who dared to be members of trade unions, and single parents. Making pariahs of the former has left the UK without any industry worth speaking of (but those who only shuffle money around are richer than ever), and the children of the latter are now of voting age, but obviously have no memories of how they were treated by the right wing. The trouble is that if you speak out against the way entire sectors of society are mistreated/misrepresented, you're immediately classified as socialist or communist -- and they're the biggest pariahs of all.

Keep the proles occupied with invective, and scoop up as much of their money as you can

You are absolutely right in your comments, and well done for posting them. These accusations are no more true now than they were when either my children or indeed I (40+ years ago) were teenagers.

It's time for a new signature.

Well, when I was a teenager we used to hang around drinking and mindlessly vandalising things. And so were my friends. ;P

No wonder we need talent from outside UK, since our British teenagers are all hopeless - they seem to be more happy to be thugs and criminals, and maybe X-factor kind of stuff, but not education or civilisation! Pathetic!!!!!!!!
