    What did you do?

Unlucky, but do not sit and dwell upon it, get out straight away and grab the first thing that comes along. Once you have that, go looking for the right job!

Try something different, far too many people getting into the game and the salaries and kudos are not as good as they used to be.

Agreeing with DD. Allow yourself a brief moment of pity (that's it - gone!) then get right on with finding something else. Waiting for the "right" job these days is dangerous - your cash just seems to disappear faster than expected. I ended up contracting (something I didn't think I would ever do) because I couldn't find anything permanent in the deepest recession for years. I'm quite enjoying it but it's not something I would have willingly left a permie job for - maybe some higher power had decided it was just the moment to try it out.

Yeah, better to have a shitty job but bring in some money while you look than erode your savings like sandcastles in the incomin tide waiting for that ripe plum to fall from the tree (If you will excuse my appalling use of mixed metaphores!).

If you're good and have a decent CV you should not have a problem getting another gig. The market (in London) appears quite bouyant right now and I am confident I should find a new contract fairly rapidly (allowing for a couple of weeks of 'resting' :-))

You are still a programmer - just not working at the moment. Use this unexpected and probably unwelcome spare time to brush up on new skills that the market seems to be demanding. This will be the longest stretch of free time you will have so make the most of it. Even if you only end up with a basic knowledge of a subject you can speak about how you learned it, the problems you found AND OVERCAME and how you want to progress that area.

Yup, my first contract was only just better than being on the dole in the end by about £50 a week (after all expenses etc) but after several months of not working it was very welcome and ended up being a bit of a foothold to get the next 2 contracts. Much easier to get another job when you are working than when you're not.

Well if you resigned then why are you surprised at not having a job? You did say OMG. I find that if you resign, you tend to be out of a job, and to do it for a girl is a bit dim. "Hi honey, I love you so much I want to drag you into penury and the workhouse".

That's pretty close to what I was going to say... I would have added: "In the current economic condition, to resign without having something to go onto is pretty silly. It may be worth cooling down, and then trying to see if you can rescind the resignation"
