http://blogs.forbes.com/andygreenberg/2010/08/24/full-body-scan-technology-deployed-in-street-roving-vans/[^] Now you all know how I feel about the government and body scanners, but this part really ticks me off.\\ American Science & Engineering, a company based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has sold U.S. and foreign government agencies more than 500 backscatter x-ray scanners mounted in vans that can be driven past neighboring vehicles to see their contents, Joe Reiss, a vice president of marketing at the company told me in an interview. While the biggest buyer of AS&E’s machines over the last seven years has been the Department of Defense operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, Reiss says law enforcement agencies have also deployed the vans to search for vehicle-based bombs in the U.S. Do you realize the kind of radiation required to see the contents of vehicles? The mother fuckers are just going to start radiating entire neighborhoods with these things and destroy people's DNA, and the DNA of all other living things around.

The intended uses of this are port/border control (Scan commercial vehicles to make sure they're not carrying contraband) and police surveillance... The first one seems reasonable, but the second will likely be abused. It's up to the courts to restrict these things. Doing infrared scans on a private residence counts, I believe, as a "search" of the home, which would require a warrant. I don't know whether vehicles are covered under that, but they should be. This would have to fall under the same heading. As for radiation levels... You're exaggerating (Big surprise) about them radiating entire neighborhoods, but I do see how it could be a concern if these are overused/misused. It's one thing to scan someone when they're getting on an airplane (Since you get more radiation from being in the upper atmosphere for a few hours anyway), but if they start driving around and scanning everything, it could add up.

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

As specialized equipment it actually makes quite a bit of sense to have something like that to deal with car bombs and such. Any other use of them I can pop off the top of my head is a fairly blatant violation of privacy.

Please explain how this would destroy peoples DNA. As someone who is doing a BSc in Evolutionary Biology, and having made a fairly in depth study of DNA I would appreciate your opinion on this.

I asked for your opinion, not a link to wikipedia, which, as you have previously stated, is not a reliable source.

But how exactly does this destroy the DNA, Captain Brain Fart? Does it dissolve the hydrogen bridge bonds between the DNA-strands, does it prevent complementary base pairs from bonding, does it disintegrate the phosphate-desoxyribose-backbone,... What does it?? For once in your miserable lifetime, do not repeat what the internet pours into your drug-desolated mind, do not just answer with more links Ah, know what? Forget it. Waste of time.

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." (DNA)
