The late, unlamented was not wearing a helmet... Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity. -- Lazarus Long

A man killed in a motorbike crash in south Manchester was a suspected thief who police previously refused to pursue because he was not wearing a helmet. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-11211260[^] "At the time, Greater Manchester Police said it followed a nationwide policy that motorbikes should not be pursued because of the higher risk of injury to the rider." Unbelievable! Everyone gets their just desserts so thank goodness some higher power intervened on behalf of our considerate police force and their overlord's crass instructions.

Car chases aren't allowed in Florida unless there is imminent risk of bystander injury. From what I hear the cops get your tag and then let you go. They will come knocking in the morning when you sober up.

The hand wringing liberals who are upset at the thought of death being an inappropriate sentence for a minor crime need only to realise that the his death was the punishment for the highest crime of all, Stupidity. We all celebrate it when we read the Darwin Awards.

You would wish it was a capital offense. Cops only shrug and refuse to investigate property crimes. I will give you a direct quote from a Detective from the Palm Springs, FL police department in regard to my motorcycle being stolen after telling me they would not investigate or hand it off to the Sheriff: "So, what is less important that my motorcycle being stolen?" "I suppose, if someone reported their Christmas lights stolen that would be less important" So while, legally, property crime may not be a capital offense; I will no longer bother to call the law and will shoot to kill instead. Thus promoting theft to a capital offense.

I would not consider Drink Driving a minor crime. (And I know, I have, to my shame, a drink drive conviction where I was just over the limit, and I had to attend a course. I think that course should be compulsory for all learner drivers. No-one was killed or hurt in my case, I was just unlucky enough to be pulled over and failed a breath test, but hey ho, I learnt my lesson!).

Crazy crazy country old England. Was there a couple of weeks ago and was not allowed to have my take away coffee in a paper cup without a lid because of OH&S. The guy gave me my coffee, with lid, and then offered to put the lid in the bin for me as long as I removed it. Crap coffee too.

I don't regard death as the right punishment for a bike thief. :)

While I don't think all of the high speed chases are justified, and they certainly are dangerous, the police seem extremely cautious in the videos I've seen. It's the criminal who is the problem. How can you say the police "provoke" them to drive dangerously? All they were trying to do is arrest or pull them over, then they take off. Now, that usually means the criminal is scared shitless about something more than whatever it is the cop originally targeted them for. The cops give chase, usually at a good distance while they coordinate roadblocks down the road. What would you have them do, let them go? Say, "Oh well, I guess we'll get him next time." How you can put their reckless behavior on the shoulders of the police is baffling.

That would eventually make the cops concerned with. :)

Spot on. Another thing to note is the number of injuries to the public caused by the police cars themselves. The police should use their brains to catch thieves, not over-powered cars or firearms.

How would the police have caught him or pursued him?

That's called seagull management (or sometimes pigeon management)... Fly in, flap your arms and squawk a lot, crap all over everything and fly out again... by _Damian S_

Funny, that. They didn't pursue him, but he was still charged with stealing the bike, arraigned, and bailed to appear. Isn't it amazing how much more effective real police work is than mindless Starskey & Hutch behaviour?
