While I don't think all of the high speed chases are justified, and they certainly are dangerous, the police seem extremely cautious in the videos I've seen. It's the criminal who is the problem. How can you say the police "provoke" them to drive dangerously? All they were trying to do is arrest or pull them over, then they take off. Now, that usually means the criminal is scared shitless about something more than whatever it is the cop originally targeted them for. The cops give chase, usually at a good distance while they coordinate roadblocks down the road. What would you have them do, let them go? Say, "Oh well, I guess we'll get him next time." How you can put their reckless behavior on the shoulders of the police is baffling.

You would wish it was a capital offense. Cops only shrug and refuse to investigate property crimes. I will give you a direct quote from a Detective from the Palm Springs, FL police department in regard to my motorcycle being stolen after telling me they would not investigate or hand it off to the Sheriff: "So, what is less important that my motorcycle being stolen?" "I suppose, if someone reported their Christmas lights stolen that would be less important" So while, legally, property crime may not be a capital offense; I will no longer bother to call the law and will shoot to kill instead. Thus promoting theft to a capital offense.

That would eventually make the cops concerned with. :)

Spot on. Another thing to note is the number of injuries to the public caused by the police cars themselves. The police should use their brains to catch thieves, not over-powered cars or firearms.

How would the police have caught him or pursued him?

Funny, that. They didn't pursue him, but he was still charged with stealing the bike, arraigned, and bailed to appear. Isn't it amazing how much more effective real police work is than mindless Starskey & Hutch behaviour?

The late, unlamented was not wearing a helmet... Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity. -- Lazarus Long

In my experience, the stupidest people work in the City (I mean Really thick -- four short planks level), trading shares or making decisions about billions of (insert currency unit here). Those mindless cretins just ruin other people's lives, not their own.
