        It isn't as bad as you make it look. Don't most people associate even plain Engineer with bridges and buildings ?

            Around here, when people hear I am a programmer/software developer/whatever, they usually either ask what kinds of computers I put together or ask if I can fix their computer - so that'd be a step up in people's perceptions :-\

              I hear ya. I got asked to fix a mobile phone last time I said I was a software developer. I've been asked to fix TVs and video cassette recorders in the past as well.
