I'll wait until the wife and kids are in bed before trying that out.

As do I. Beth however hasn't even been given the opportunity to meet hers - and probably never will.

... both of my parents have always gotten along very well with their inlaws. The main tension's always been that my dad and his dad have been at best on borderline non-speaking terms for the last 40 years. This seems to be something of a tradition in dad's family. Grandpa Neely mostly severed ties with his family after they married (I don't know why); and having learned nothing from his youthful folly dad's using our political differences to put lots of strain on my relationship with him.

Yes, it is. Unfortunately my parents obviously decided to sever all ties with me 8 years ago (them moving house without telling me where they were going was a bit of a giveaway), so it's solely down to them. I try not to lose any sleep over it, but emotions being what they are it isn't that simple.

Tell me about it. I don't have any contact with them either.

I've been married for 11 years now and have two wonderful kids. I unfortunately have a marriage where my mother-in-law despises me and tries on a regular basis to make my life a living hell. It has put a real strain on my marriage since the very beginning. The old adage that when you marry someone, you are also marrying the family and everyone in it is very, very true. Sad thing is, you have no control over how the other family members are going to accept you or act toward you. Just venting...

Hmmm, I wonder why that is.
