Hi Chris, I'm not sure how much work it would be for you, but I'd love to see CodeProject added as a Mobile Channel at AvantGo.com so that I may read it on my PocketPC while on the go. AvantGo lets me sync with the newest version of the site every time I connect to ActiveSync. As I understand it, people with lesser ( ;-) ) PDAs such as Palm, Visor, Psion, etc, as well as WAP pagers and phones can use the service too, so some others here may find it useful. (I'm going to get lots of flames for that comment, arent I?) -Mike Stevenson Owner, Liquid Mirror Software CoderX@liquidmirror.com

I don't think you have to do anything too fancy to make it friendly to mobile devices. A text-only or very low graphics version of the site (Code Project Light or something ;-) ) would be ideal, without the side bars; just the central part of the main page, with picks of the week, and last few updates, linking to 'light' versions of the articles. Maybe also the last few comments in the Lounge or selected forums, although that could start to bump up the size of pages; wouldn't really want more than a couple of hundred kilobytes, max, only got 2meg in my Palm m100.

Don't have a PDA myself, but I think it would be very difficult do make the >code< sections look good, since they have no implicit line-breaks at the window border and would make it difficult to read, if you have to scroll to the right all the time. Or am I wrong? Uwe Keim http://www.zeta-software.de

It's certainly not a problem with at least the Palm version of the AvantGo browser. I've just tried adding a page with code on, and the code is word-wrapped at the edge of the page (and it even has a go at rendering it in a fixed pitch font). With the header, footer and attached forum removed, it'd work well on a Palm.

Chris, This page contains instructions on how to sign up in their channel database and guidelines that help make the Mobile Channel a little more "mobile friendly". It is, in essence, just a simpler page designed for smaller screens. You would exclude most graphics and keep the number of pages to a minimum... Maybe the 5 most recent articles and 5 most recent threads in the lounge. There is also a mechanism to do off-line forms, which could allow someone to post a new thread or a reply to the lounge and have it automagically post to the site when they sync with their desktop. https://avantgo.com/developer/web/index.html It seems as though there may be an initial investment of a few custom asp pages, but after that I think there would be little or no work on your part to maintain it, since the site is largely database driven. -Mike Stevenson Owner, Liquid Mirror Software CoderX@liquidmirror.com
