And the rant goes on.

Yosh, some of you might remember my rant about the database I made and had to fill, witch was a slow and agonizing process... It all turned out to be for nothing. They still want to use the database but have completely no use for the data. The sources they gave me to complete the data was unreliable and incomplete itself. Now they want me to clear the DB and prepare to fill it again. Like hell I’m doing that, next thing they say is that they want the old data back, better put this aside for now. This time with the physical files. So we have to look up the clients and request the files from the archives and then wait like 2 weeks for it. This is going to take a lot of time, we are only allowed to request 30 files a day. (PP that is) Now don’t get me wrong… I don’t mind doing brainless work; I just hate doing brainless work that is completely pointless. Now 2 good things came out of this. First, they like they way I worked, it got done in a reletive short time and it was a complete as it could be. And apparently I stated my complains about it right while still doing what I had to do. Second, is that I get to lead a small project team (5/6 members) to get the job done this time. Best part of it is that I get to choose the members myself (with restriction of course, they expect me to mostly use the interns and 1 or 2 regular employers). I guess good things can come from brainless and pointless work.

No not yet. That will have to wait till they say that after working through every record again that the data is outdated or something and they won't be needing it. But I figured it would be safer to rant here then around the office with all those "evil" managers around. Seriously, this office just has 2 managers but for some reason 8 are running around here today.

Apparently there is a meeting with the managers of some of the local offices. And to top it off they just informed me that they want me to give a presentation about the DB at the next meeting (in 2 weeks)... and I have no real clue on how to do that. I mean, it’s just a DB, it hardly has an interface attached, what am I going to talk about... Guess ill have to ask my teacher about that... I almost wish I could go back to my lil dark whole and just code while answering the occasional service request okay, enough rambling, allmost time to go home and build in those new 2 Terabyte HDD's.

Ask your manager what it is they want to get out of it, what they want to understand. If they're not technical managers then their interest is almost certainly the business impact of the project, in which case the only technical terms that should be used are: Database, Table and Column. Even if you think this project is a waste of space (which from a technical perspective it certainly sounds like it) there may be good business reasoning behind it. In fact you can always elaborate on the time costs of a lack of decisiveness, as happened, though not assigning blame obviously but framed as "better communications needed". Most importantly face-time with superiors is not to be wasted (*) * - Disclaimer: I am an 8 year veteran Toastmaster - love having an audience. Individual results may vary

That’s along the same lines my teacher told me. He just left out the waste of space and better communications needed stuff. Thanks for the advice, ill be sure to put it to good use.
