Just wasted elsewhere. I do not agree with the hunting, however, I have wondered for years about the charities that collect for children. How many of the children they help end up having kids that need help because the cause of the need has not changed? I think helping out after a disaster is okay but not for years and years. That's what creates the destruction of our social safety nets. I've been on unemployment and its not fun. I hate it. Not working destroys your sense of worth I think. Just giving food to people and not helping them to find work instead, etc perpetuates the cycle. There is a lot of work force development going on, but you don't hear about it. If we didn't subsidize the farming industry here food prices would reflect the cost of production. Farmers in Africa would be able to make a living better if we and any other country didn't. I don't think our food prices would go through the roof either, but at least then another corporate give away would end. Family farmers aren't the ones that really benefit from it anyway. It's the industrial farming that does. Tea partiers are right about at least one thing I see and that the government trough is large and wide and many take from it.

I have never understood why it is a good idea to increase life expectancy in areas where there is famine and therefore clearly already too many people for the available food. You cannot increase the rate of evolution of a society or an area no more than you can that of a species. Evolution has to take place according to the environment it is happening in. Trying to create a population in any area larger than it can sustain is not a good idea. Giving guns to people who have not been able to develop them themselves is not a good idea. Trying to impose democracy on a society that has not developed it yet is not a good idea. Too much of the world has been buggered up a little bit more by people trying to interfere, some were interfering for their own benefit, others were trying to help. I don't think any of them have done any long term good.

It's been sometime ago, but CSS and Christian had an argument about home many resources it could take to sustain a population and that there is only so much to go around, before your out. Be prepared to repeat this with him. ;P

It is blindingly obvious, and so simple. And what better way to rid ourselves of the bottom fifth of our population! (Just what School League Tables and Exams are for!) Cheap food, massive tax savings and lower unemployment. Not to mention a great motivator for the indolent classes to improve themselves! The man was a genius.

It depressed the hell out of me that they were all disgusted at it because they thought it was a real suggestion. I'd been enjoying a fortnightly dose of sarcasm courtesy of private eye since the age of 13 or so, and they couldn't work similar stuff out aged 18-21. Still, they were on an English course, so they couldn't have been that clever. Akin to a-level breathing, or BTec Sleep I suppose.

Stop helping them. The population will stabilize on a size at which it is capable of growing/gathering enough food for itself. Maybe that size is zero, I doubt it, but if it is, so be it. In fact, maybe allow them to be hunted in certain areas (and only a limited number each year). This works for deer and wild boar so why not Africans? Problem solved. As a bonus, we would waste less tax money on them.
I work for a foundation that is helping children in South Africa, India and the US. It's a lot different working in SA. When we give a scholarship in the US we can usually just give money for books and tuition. In SA we end up having to give extra money for food, medicine and other costs just so the students can stay in school.

Not even close. Some of the projects we help fund are things like http://www.dewormtheworld.org/[^]. The foundation's approach is to only fund projects that can make a measurable difference in people's lives rather then just dump money on a problem.

Truer than you'd believe. I left teaching after one year because of the two problems: the kids; the teachers. Still don't know which was worse, at least the kids were supposed to behave like kids, not sure what the teacher's excuse was.
