Honiara is pretty much in lockdown. They announced the sentence on current MP and former militant leader Jimmy (Rasta) Lusibaea today. He did a bit of plea bargaining apparently and got two years for pleading guilty to manslaughter and one other charge in exchange for them dropping the murder charge. He's asked his supporters to accept the judgement, but from the numbers of them I've seen meandering into the middle of town today I'm not sure that they were listening. There's already been a bit of 'minor civil unrest', but they (police, media) are expecting more tonight once everyone has had a skinful of Kwaso (local over-distilled hooch, 90+% pure ethanol). A planeload of police were flown in from Townsville this morning arriving around 6am. Even so, I'm just staying quiet at my house. Camera at the ready...

Well there will be definitely one of those on the helicopter presently circling the city centre (around 1km from my house). The real danger here is on the political side. Lusibaea's conviction will mean that he loses his seat in the Parliament and a by-election will have to be held. He's a member of the current ruling coalition who only have a one seat majority. So there's a high chance of political instability over the next few months - with all that that means.

The Police have just reopened the roads, but they're covering every intersection in town with additional officers. Another 3 hours until sundown...
