Even though one of my good friends who works with a reputed AntiVirus cos say that they are just the firemen, I think its these companies themselves that write them in the first place. Looking at the complex way these viruses exploit vulnerabilities in applications and the OS and more importantly the HUGE business it generates for these cos, I think not every one is written by some crazy moron who has loads of time to kill.
