Windows 7 On a 1GB System [modified]

My dad's machine (an old dual-core AMD with 1GB DDR RAM) had been running XP, and it was cluttered with all kinds of crapware (including Symantec A/V installed by his wife against my advice). He told me to wipe it all if I wanted to, and so I am in the process of installing Weven (32-bit) on the box. It took 20 minutes to go from "Loading Windows Files..." to "Installing Windows". This is going to be pretty damn painful, and I think I'm going to have to get him some more memory - 1GB just ain't enough. EDIT ======= Well, that wasn't too bad. It only took 50 minutes total to get to the final boot up.

Nah it's not really usable with 1GB, even the 32-bit version. There's enough memory for the actual OS but not enough left to run most applications very well. I think 1.5 GB or more should be enough for most apps other than the really demanding ones and games. I've got an old Hush media center PC I use in the living room just running windows media center. It had a Celeron M processor and 1 GB of RAM and I recently upgraded it from Windows XP MCE to Windows 7 32-bit. It would be fine for a while but then MC would really start to slow down with lots of hard disk activity. I upgraded it to 2 GB and now it runs fine no performance problems whatsoever even after running for weeks and with 2 guest virtual machines running in the background in VmWare Server and with aero etc all enabled. So yes, the extra RAM really does make a big difference.

I am finding 2GB not quite enough at times on one machine, 4G is fine on another though.

If you can't upgrade his memory (or buy a new computer for him) you can always get a fast USB stick and enable ReadyBoost[^].

Memory is readily available. The pain of it is that in September, I threw away about 20GB of DDR RAM because I couldn't find anyone to take it. :suss:

It sucks to just have thrown away the parts that you need. I'm "Just in case" still having a load of 5 1/4" diskettes on the attic together with a working drive. At least it worked last I checked, some fifteen years ago or so.

I'm running 7 Home Edition on a MSI Wind netbook that previously had XP installed and it's running fine - I have upgraded to 2GB of RAM, but it was running OK on 1GB

I'm doing the same on an EEE. 1gb is enough for light browsing as long as you don't install any crapware in the background. Once you have more than a few tabs open though your commit charge gets too high and you start flogging the swap file. I'll probably be upgrading the ram sometime between now and the next time I plan to use it for more than a few hours (probably not for a few months).

i'm running W7 on an ancient 1.25GB laptop. works fine for running iTunes. a 4GB USB drive for ReadyBoost seems to help performance.

Well, it's only a 32-bit system, so I'm gonna go ahead and add 2GB to it (just $56) since it can't really used 4gb.

We got a new cursomer server in a few months ago and it didn't even have a connector on the mother board for a floppy drive :sigh:
