Names of cities/towns

Yes, but isn't it surprising that places miles apart have same names. I don't know if any of the Indian city shares name with any other one outside Indian sub-continent.

Not a co-incidence at all. Britain owned America, and named a lot of new towns and cities after the British ones. Even some state names are British. Georgia after King George, Virginia after Elizabeth the First, the Carolinas after King Charles etc.

Yes I thought of the same. Many places were renamed during British rule in India as well which I think has something to with difficult pronunciation for people in West. Was there British empire in Canada as well? And what is so special about Halifax that there are three of them at least on the planet?

Is it just a coincidence or is there any reason behind USA and UK having places with same names? For instance: Halifax - UK, USA, Canada Newark - USA, UK There may be more that I am unaware of.

A not so qualified guess. The founding people of the towns in US or Canada came from the named towns in UK. A curiosity, there is a place in Minnesota with the name Sweden.

One you forgot York - UK, New York - USA. As is the case with many of these, not restricted to UK placenames, people emigrating from Europe founded new towns and villages and named them after the place they originated from.

The one near Holiday Inn Hotel, in City Centre, Birmingham. I have been there and food is not appreciating compared to other restaurants in city centre like Shimla Pinks and Jimmy Spice :) And i dont think so! :laugh:

Er...Yes. The Queen is also Queen of Canada, she is the funny looking woman on the front of a Canadian Dollar. The French had it for a while, then General Wolfe[^] took it for the British.

Interesting point to made here. Originally New York was a Dutch Colony called New Amsterdam, with part of the city called Harlem, after Haarlem in The Netherlands. The Dutch called the English Colonists 'John Cheeses', which in Dutch is Jan Kees. So the term Yankees actually means "The British", odd innit?

Considering many of the initial settlers on this continent were from Europe, no, it's not coincidental at all.

Calgary in Canada is named after a tiny settlement on the Isle of Mull which is off the west coast of Scotland

There is a city named Lebanon here in the U.S. as well among other names shared with other countries.
