So after a year filled with helping my nephew assemble vast quantities of LEGO, I realise that the toy provides learning and preparation for more than you would think in later life. For example when completed there are still several small unexplained pieces left. So when you are done reassembling that Engine you have been overhauling and find a few bolts left over, don't worry LEGO taught us that this is as it should be.

PANIC!!! There should never be bolts left over: just means you've left them out and you won't be happy when all of the oil drains out and the engine makes a funny noise as piston 4 comes flying out of the block... (Have seen the aftermath of that).

But on the other hand, Lego does just give you a few extra parts in case you loose 1 or 2.

The real LEGO lesson is that if you ever try to build something yourself, sooner or later it will break. That's why you should always hire a consultant to do the screw-up for you. :omg:

That's been my experience with the Architecture Series[^]. After building the first one, I had a couple of pieces left over. After double checking everything, I concluded that they must be extras. But it got me wondering why they chose those particular pieces since they were so many different ones. Maybe they know which pieces are typically lost.

They also spend vast amounts of money working out the exact size and shape will inflict the most pain when you stand on a piece, barefoot, at 3.45am on your way to the toilet.

When I was ten (or so) I fixed my grandmas old alarmclock. You know, the oldfashioned kind with two bells on top. I took it apart, fixed some bent rods, oiled the gears and put it back together. It worked quite fine, except I had a gear left over. I found out much later that my brother had added an extra gear as a prank. He enjoyed my several extra hours of work immensely.

He sounds too much like my brother, frankly. Every childhood Christmas, we used to do a 'family' jigsaw puzzle. My brother would take no part in the procedings, but would hide one piece, so he could fit in the last piece. :suss: Then, one year, he forgot where he had put it...

My Shuttle kit was missing about 7 pieces, but had about 20 extra ones that had nothing to do with the kit.
