HTC Desire? [modified]
-
So what do you guys think about the HTC Desire? I'm planning to ditch my 3 years old HTC S710 phone for an Android, and the Desire appears to be my best bet according to the reviews. The Samsung Galaxy S appears to be a better phone, but it is not readily available here, and is around 20% more expensive than the Desire. If you have a Desire, how much battery life do you get for say an hour of browsing and 4-5 calls a day? Couple of days? And is the Pentile[^] technology as bad as some reviews make it out to be? Oh, and if it matters, I don't care much about the camera (still or video).

Are you looking for Desire or Desire HD? I got Desire HD and it is a good phone. You can expect to have two battery life depending on what are the applications that run all the time and how you connect to internet. If you are using Wireless, battery will die quickly.

Just the Desire, not the HD version. Yeah, all the reviews agree on one thing - WiFi sucks the largest amount of power out of the battery.

I could never get more than a day out of mine, with the usage that you describe. It sometimes wouldn't even make it home to be honest, and the settings were as optimised as I could make them. Other than that and the limited internal memory (I hit the app storage limit pretty quickly, as bugger all apps use the official apps2sd feature). I'm currently on an HD7, another quality device from HTC, and I'm liking WP7 so far. There's a couple of things I miss from Android, but I still keep my Desire around just in case, more than anything for the free satnav capabilities. And in terms of battery for identical usage, the HD7 has never run out of juice on me before I head to bed, in fact it’s only shown the low battery warning once.

Agreed that battery life is an issue. You *have* to charge every night, or you'll run out at inopportune moments. I used Google Maps Navigation in the car for the first time at the weekend, got me from door to destination perfectly - quite impressed considering the TomTom app on iPhone is £50 or so. Other than battery life, I really like the phone. Does everything I want + more than I need.

I have no experience of this phone but I have just read a comparative review in a UK magazine. The HTC Desire got a "Recommended" award (i.e. it came second to the iPhone 4 :-D ). The review says that "battery life is among the best". Both it and the iPhone had 60% remaining after one days use which is A 30 minute phone call 50MB download 1 hour audio playback 1 hour with screen on rest of day in default email sync mode. Hope this helps. :)

i've had one of these since they first launched last april and absolutely love it ... i rooted it and have an almost stock ROM but with the facebook and twitter crap i don't use removed ... there are a lot of ROMs to choose from tho and of course the stock SENSE is great too i have found that if you turn off all the auto-sync and auto-update stuff and use it like a normal phone or pocket computer the battery lasts well over a day ... usually more like 2+ recommended :) [edit] didn't see the things you asked about specifically... pentile display has no effect whatsoever on the crispiness of the screen afaict ... i use fbreader and read a *lot* of ebooks on mine with no problems at all ... the text is *very* sharp the camera is ok ... adequate nothing to write home about especially after my nokia n86 which has an amazing camera but crap everything else [/edit]

actually not true ... set the wifi sleep policy to "never" and it reduces the battery drain significantly ... weird i know ... also use push for your email and that saves battery life hugely over polling

The Galaxy is really plastic in its feel in my opinion. I bought the HTC Desire HD and I'm really happy with it (and it really pisses off my wife who has an iPhone) If you use it as a phone only, the battery lasts for way more than six days. (The longest I've tested that due to roaming costs) But if you play around with it continuously for two hours with the wifi on, the battery will be basically empty.

Just got a Galaxy S as where I am I can get it far cheaper then the Desire. The Desire is also an excellent bit of kit and there isn't much to tell between the two in my opinion. That said I was strongly considering an HD7, but the fact that it is so tied into zune for managing music made it unlikely to be that usable in a household that is mainly a linux, one (most recent win version we have is 2k....
