About VB
-
Hi! I'm my name's Nick and I'm relatively new to CP. I am a VB Programmer (ducks in anticipation of vegetable throwing to begin :) ) and I would like to talk a little about VB if I could. I started programming learning C++ and I loved it, to say the least. Sadly, the current economic state of my country( That's Malaysia to those that's curous) made it impossible for me to be picky about jobs, I got a job as a VB Programmer, and I've been at it for more than a year now. I'm much proficient at VB now that C++, due to the lack of practice :( From what I can see from the boards, a lot of people really don't like VB, mainly cause some of you complained that's it's too easy and that anyone can code in VB, but I thought that was the whole point of VB. Anyways, I've decided to list my view on VB 1) Managers seems to like it a lot as opposed to C++. I suppose it's coz managers like what they can see and touch :) 2) It takes less hassle (less skill) to code in VB than any other language that i know of 3) A C++ programmer can easily pick up VB but a VB Programmer would have a hard time trying to learn C++ 4) VB uses way too much resources, causing my PC's to hang a lot :( LOL this, obviously is not good! In summary, i would say that VB has more than it's shares of problems, but the redeeming quality is that it's so frikkin easy to use. Most programmers prefer VB to other languages due to it's simplicity. I guess what I'm trying to say is that "Give VB a break". If not, since more and more people are using VB, it is inevitable that we will take over the World !! bwahahahaha....errr jk! :) Anyways, that's just my 2 cents ( or more ).Thanks for listening....or not :P BTW: what do you all think about VB.net. Do you all hate it too ?, or do you think it has potential? From what I can see it's more or less the same as C# Nick
VB is as VB does
I've used VB and I don't like it. I even hate using VBA in MS Office apps now. Having a warning flashed at me everytime I move from the current line to go copy something like a var name from a previous line is really grating after a while. The biggest problem with VB is that it's easy to do simple tasks, but as soon as you want to do something more complex you've got to jump through all sorts of hoops. And in regard to what CG said about downloading VB apps off the net. They have a certain look to them. often use non-standard UI conventions and the GUI is generally poorly planned. Now, before I download something, if the VB runtimes are mentioned, I think twice.
"What do you want to do tonight, Bill?"
"Same thing we do every night, Steve. Try to take over the world!"
