Yeah, they tell you that and it is complete BS. I can't wait for the day when they say - oh, so you want to use HTTP with your Internet account? Well, then you need to open "web browsing" type of account...
Actually, it's not BS. They don't want Joe Blow Average running servers from home because 99 time sout of 100, the server won't be properly secured. They'r trying to protect their other users. I have AT&T and I pay for a block of static IPs, which allows me to run servers. BTW, I don't think AT&T has a EUA that specifically states that you can't run a server, but it's a bit of a hassle to do when you have a single dynamic IP instead of five static ones.

I'll skip the part that I've actually waited over a month to get Internet up and running... the thing that finally pissed me off is that they block port 25 by default and then require you to pay "special fee" in order to unblock that. I understand why they block it in the first place - OK, somebody in management got this "genius idea" on how to solve the spam problem (and it might work for residential users that get infected with mail-sending-viruses) - but to turn that into money extortion game... really, really lame.

I read past that on first read...yeah there customer service sucks. I worked for a huge company and they dropped the in-house telephony dept. and took on AT&T and support went from 1hr-1day to 2 weeks - never.

And, by the way, it's not that I'm running SMTP server on my end - I can't connect to any remote SMTP server. You use smtp.gmail.com to send your email? Well, screw you... use web browser instead.
You can do it, you just have to use the mechanism they provide.

I canceled U-Verse for Comcast and canceled wireless for Sprint and I could not be happier with the decision.

... The point is not that I can't make it work... I've setup VPN that allows me to bypass their stupid restriction and am currently sending emails using port 25 (because SMTP server I'm connecting only uses that port and no, it's not Gmail). The point is that people will sign up with AT&T and accept idiotic restrictions (or try to compromise like you did by saying "meh, others do it also"). The point is - it's stupid - accepting that somebody is selling you Internet access and then blocking you from using a service that is essential component of Internet access. Again, how would you feel if you paid for Internet access and then found out that you can access YouTube - because it consumes too much bandwidth? That sounds OK?

They need that fee to pay people read your mail before releasing it in the wild, and to make copies for the FBI, DEA, BATF, CIA, Homeland Security, Facebook and MySpace. For a small added charge, they'll cc your mother.
