Dad died last night.

Regardless of the relationship, he was still your father and I think in time you will realise this. Perhaps it is shock or just the suddeness, however, you have my condolences, it is a sad thing to lose a parent.

Much as it pains me to agree with Fat_By (lol), I'd be feeling rather similar. Alot of people tell me that I should "build bridges", and that a father is important in a man's life - but the thing that they miss is that their father and mine are completely different beasts.

Thate makes two rabbits and a parent. That MUST be a record. :) OK, go on call me a cunt, but there was no love lost betwen us.

But regardless of that, you have my sympathies because regardless of the above quote, you have some feelings on the matter or you wouldn't have posted that here. All the best to you
I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.

My father died six months after I was born. I envy you.

That can be more or less the operative word for some fathers.

Ok you're a c... Maybe not: relationships with parents can be trying. I've tried very hard not be the parent that my parents were. I guess it must have worked cos the kids still talk to me.

And that is a very, very good thing... :) Mine still do, and hopefully not just because they still need me to put a roof over their heads...

Have you read "The Brothers Karamazov"? The chapter in which a lawyer defends a son accused of murdering his father[^] is very interesting: "Let the son stand before his father and ask him, 'Father, tell me, why must I love you? Father, show me that I must love you,' and if that father is able to answer him and show him good reason, we have a real, normal, parental relation, not resting on mystical prejudice, but on a rational, responsible and strictly humanitarian basis. But if he does not, there's an end to the family tie. He is not a father to him, and the son has a right to look upon him as a stranger, and even an enemy. Our tribune, gentlemen of the jury, ought to be a school of true and sound ideas."

My condolences. :rose: My father died 5 months ago and I hadn't talked to him in almost 10 years. His wife called me the day before he passed and told me that he was asking to see me. I didn't go to see him. I didn't feel the need to "forgive" him on his deathbed. He had liver cancer and had been in touch with my sister months before he was hospitalized and never mentioned speaking to me. He was a complete bastard but when I heard he had passed I grieved for the father he could have been.

Actually I dont have any feelings on the matter, I posted merely because it made an amusing finale to the dead rabbits post.

We have had it out between us, and arrived at a civil, even almost respectfull relationship, but never love. That died little by little over the long years of my childhood.

Along the lines of how PK Dick's writing was once described. (Paraphrased) Your wife leaves you, you lose your job, the bank is about to repossess your car...and then Martians land in your back yard. Pretty sure it was about Phil...
I also lost a hard disk and all phone and internet services this week! :)

I am fortunate to have had a great Dad. He passed away in '89 and I still miss him.
Everybody SHUT UP until I finish my coffee...
