Try b4efore you buy software that stops working when you pay for it!!!
-
A new support case came in the other day, woman complaining about a error message "missing richtx32.ocx" I think to myself *no problem* - I'll reply with some regsvr loving... A couple of emails to and fro and she ends up saying "if it doesn't work I want a refund" I reply with more troubleshooting steps and asking her to answer my questions to aid troubleshooting. And I repeated the message plastered all across our website -> our software is sold on a Try-Before-You-Buy basis. She must think I'm stupid or something, look at this: "I did try it before I purchased it and the demo worked fine the problems only occurred after I paid for it which makes us very concerned about the product as a whole as to wether it is a scam."

To put this in perspective. We've been in business since 2004. We've sold over 1000 copies with admittedly 60 support cases. It makes me grumpy that non-technical people think they can spin technical BS, that makes no senxe and expect us to fix it!

Whether she's lying or not, I think you should just give her a refund (with the usual legal email about her needing to uninstall it and deleting the setup etc.)

Yes, I do feel that the rise in online transactions has also lead to a massive increase in blatant fraud, much like CG's thread below (Ebay). Could be that people find it easier to justify to themselves when they aren't face-to-face with someone.

Over the years a handful of customers have complained to Paypal after they purchased. In all instances Paypal was on our side and told us to advertise the software as "Non-Tangible" because they said a lot of people try and get free software this way. I've already replied: Can you please tell me the steps so I can reproduce this issue? Do I install the program, put in a serial and then am I suppose to get prompted about a missing ocx file?

Have you considered asking if you can remote into their system so you can either run the software yourself, or watch them doing so?

Thats the very first troubleshooting step I ask, offering to accommodate her in UK time (I'm in Oz) - she refused.

Ok, this is a no-win situation for you. As someone who's sold software in the past, I would say it's best NOT to displease a customer. You don't want bad word of mouth publicity. Give her the refund and move on.

Bugger. Is there any way you can make the software cease working if you refund her money? (eg: mark it as an invalid registration number etc)

Did you ask her what her registeration number was and when she paid for it? And who is "us" ... the person she is trying to get a free copy for???

How much does your software actually cost? Wouldn't it be better reunding the bitch's money instead of getting a reputation of being a scam company? She might not be in the right, but sometimes it's better to compromise instead of sticking rigorously to the rules... There are other things to take into consideration than mere money!

I understand your frustration but have you ever considered the possibility that she is completely right? Did you try having her troubleshoot things that weren't on you standard checklist for your average stupid customer? She did say that it was working fine "until" she paid for the product. My silly advice to you is to "listen" to what she is saying. Oh, I'm sure she doesn't think you are stupid. I do think she probably feels that "you" think she is stupid though. Always remember that you probably wouldn't have a job where you are at right now if it wasn't for those pesky customers. ;) my 2 cents worth of nothing

Why are you calling her a bitch? I don't know you from Adam but I just learned a whole lot about you from what you just wrote. A difficult woman is a bitch...I will have to remember that one for later. While I'm at it, am I an asshole for calling you out on this?

I could explain to you why I called her that, but that's irrelevant. Instead of getting hung up on one word and ignoring the rest of the message, you might want to reread my post and extract the information that matters instead...

I did extract what matters Johnny J - that's my whole point. "the bitch's money". You sound very ghetto there. I am glad that you don't work in our PR or customer service department. I am so glad that I don't work with you or for you. :omg: :wtf:

The sentiment is reciprocated - forget I tried to give you a piece of advice - clearly money is all that matters to you. And what can be more "ghetto" than your alias - at least I post under my real name...

Yes Johnny, it is so clear, to everyone here, that money is all that matters to me. I am a money monger...you got me, guilty as charged.

A good percentage of this site uses an alias. So I guess we are all ghetto-liscious. ;P
