I am planning to buy a Digital Camera, need your opinion. What I am looking for is - 1. Value for money 2. Picture quality - Should not be less than 10MP 3. Readily available in India You can share your experiences with different models / makes. Give any pointers for some reasearch.

Well I dunno much about Digital Cameras but my Uncle owns a Sony Cybershot 10 MP and it's pretty awesome. It has an expandable slot for upto 32GB or so of memory (although I suspect with the advances in technology today, it might be much more with newer models now). We recently had some pictures developed and I have to say they're looking good. :)

Personally, I like the Panasonic Lumix series (I own a slightly aging FZ series and I have access to an FX series of about the same age). They have pretty self-explanatory user interfaces and they both have quite a selection of modes. I (obviously) prefer the FZ because it gives you more control, but to be honest, what I really needed was something in between the two... And if I were you, I'd pay attention to things like: Does it have a view finder? ->Big LCDs use up power and you can't see what you're shooting if it's too bright. What size of lens? ->Pixel resolution isn't all that makes or breaks a photo. Amount and type of functionality. ->Personally, those auto-smile detection thingies would drive me up the wall! Happy shopping!

I am not sure about what a View Finder is ? How does size of lens affect picture quality ? which functionalities should i look for ? I have not used any of digital cameras yet, so please specify in details. BTW, Thanks for your reply.

Is this company reliable enough ? I had seen a model with 18X optical zoom and 12MP which I though would be a value for money. But havent heard about the company enough to be sure. Any experiences ? Here[^] is the link for company website.

What are you going to be using it for? Have you previously used film cameras? Will you be printing or just viewing online? If printing, what size do you anticipate printing? You can do the math yourself - or just Google Megapixel Myth. Personally I would look for the best quality lens for your money - you can have all the pixels you like, but if the image comes through a cheap, poor quality lens, you're just going to end up with millions of poor quality pixels! You also need to ask what sort of zoom you'd like? Beware the digital zoom - look at the purely optical zoom range - as soon as you use digital zoom you lower your resolution - although for a 6x4 print with 10 megapixel camera and a decent lens, that won't matter too much for a x2 digital zoom... I used to like Olympus a few years ago - but my wife bought a decent Olympus compact camera, and is no her third replacement (under warranty, but still a pain) as they just plain seem to stop working!

If you're viewing online, and your screen resolution is 1080P (as in HDTV) then that's 1920×1080 pixels That's 2,073,600 pixels. So you could take a 2Mp camera and view the picture perfectly on an HDTV or high resolution monitor. And that would also print fine on a 6x4 inch print at 300dpi So your 10Mp camera supports more than double that resolution, which should be more than adequate, and fine for printing up to A4 or a little larger. For lenses you need to decide what sort of thing you want to do - if you want to go pro, or treat photography as a serious hobby, you're better off going for a SLR camera or at the least a compact camera with interchangeable lenses - that way you can decide which lenses to use for which circumstances. If you're less serious and just want to take family snaps, and this is your first digital camera, I'd be tempted if I were you I'd go get a 2nd hand camera as cheap as you can - play with it for a while and then decide what you don't like about it - and look for something better.

Only if you think the experience of one consumer taints the whole brand! My Olympus is great - only 5mp but a great zoom lens and lots of nice features (I like the 'burst mode' which allows you to take series of pictures quickly - fantastic for shots of the boy stacking his skateboard!)

Your criteria for selection are all wrong; the factors that are important are, the purpose for which the camera is being purchased, the possible uses for the resulting images, and the cost. If you plan to take shots for building websites, your needs will be far less stringent than if you plan to submit your shots to photographic journals. If you plan to use the camera for quick, candid shots as you walk about town, you might want a high-quality SLR camera - or not, depending on your journalistic intent. If your interests are more artistic, and the very best image quality is foremost, you'll want a top of the line SLR with interchangeable lenses to make the most of each shot. Canon, Olympus, and Nikon make a full range of products, and having personal experience with each of them, I can recommend them all as excellent providers of high quality instruments. Each has strong points and weak points, and these you have to evaluate for yourself. But all produce high-quality products; all you have to do is select the features that are important for what you intend your camera to do for you.

That has No influence on image Quality (and is even the contrary for most cameras, even high-end full-frame sensor where the D3s is still 12mp and D700 is 12mp) Have a look at the Canon G series, G9, G10 and G11 and G12, the MP went from 12mp, to 14mp and back to 10mp; because the size of the sensor is limitative to the image quality) Don't let the vendor sell you a high MP camera just for the sake of MP. Anyway, for crappy internet pictures, nothing higher than 6mp is necessary (and for most printed application either).

That's the hole through which you look at the thing you're trying to take a picture of. Most modern compact cameras only have LCDs on the back to check what you're shooting and to review what you've shot. Mine has an additional miniature LCD with a hood over it to act like a view finder.

Depends on what you want your camera for. For example, I like taking pictures of night views of cities. Shutter speed control and self timer comes in handy. ...and a tripod as well... If you want to take pictures of people, automatic facial recognition is probably a good thing... probably...
