Has the Internet peaked?

David I'm sure if I were to sit around the pool and BBQ this evening with a few mates and beers, We would come up with some cool uses for the internet. " We did last night " Anyhow while we can conitue to find, test and exploit new applications for the internet. The "revolution has not been completed" But true webpage/HTML technology seems to have reached an end of its usefullness. But this is not the internet ! Regardz Colin
For myself I'd have to say that the revolution is over. When I first got an internet connection a few years ago everything was new to me and every site had something different about it. Now I've seen most everything. Since I've learned HTML I look more at what is wrong with a site rather than what is good about it. Occasionally I'll find a good site like this one, but still it is just another site. Although the information it provides is a great help it would be just as good if it were plain text. But this is just my opinion. For those that are new to the internet I'm sure the revolution is far from over. But for me few sites are useful. And those that are are too hard to find to bother looking.

Arg, you Australians with your weather superiority complex are irritating ;) We're going to have to drag Chris back over here and get a picture of him shoveling snow .... No question that there are new vistas to be conquered, but it seems that the blush is pretty solidly off the Internet. There's a definite "elvis has left the building" kinda feeling now. David

I agree the information would be just as good in plain text, and possibly a lot faster ! But that is the web and not the internet . The Web is the HTML world, and The internet is the flow of bits ! And the flow of bits will find a lot more applications, We have still not seen a great deal of Internet ready appliances hit the market, But when the appliances start arriving the internet will have a far more varied life. I agree with you Colin. I think the whole HTML Web thing has settled down to a point where people are now just using it as they would a newspaper or telephone. It's no longer exciting (in itself), but is now maturing to a point where more people understand its usefulness (and it's weaknesses). cheers, Chris Maunder

Talk about weather :) Tonight in Minnesota it was like the Arctic tundra (or should I say, like the Antarctic tundra, from all the snow.) The temp's about -15 F, the winds were blowing HUGE drifts of snow around and it's up to my ankles unless it's shoveled. This is crazy. I envy those who live in Alaska, the Yukon, or Antarctica. Maybe I have a weather inferiority complex. bRiAn HaRt

After the spending the better part of an hour speaking with Troy Marchand about how the vast majority of "Internet Plays" were complete and utter folly, and how the current VC mania has moved to Wireless and Broadband, I ran across this article on ZDNet. I think Andreas Pfeiffer brings up some good points in the article about how more bandwidth is simply making the internet a little nicer to use, it's not revolutionizing how we use it. True, I now watch more video clips from MSNBC than I did a year ago, and I store fewer MP3s because they are so quick to download, but its been some time since something really, really cool caught my interest. Is the revolution over?
I don't think it has peaked ... but I do know that you have to make a business plan that actually works to get any money now. Over the past couple of years people were getting money for the most STUPID IDEAS!! Of course these ideas had to peak the peoples interests (sort of like a freak show does), but most are (were:)) not sustainable as a business.... “If the fact that your business is on the Internet is your only advantage over your competitors, then it’s not a sustainable business.” On a positive note, I believe that the quality of sites are going to be going up... It wasn't long ago when a site was popular if it had a few cool graphics and some mediocre service or content... I think people are getting sick of the crap out there and want sites that actually have something useful on them, like CodeProject. Go out and actually try and find useful information, most of it is just plain CRAP. If someone wants a successful web site then they have to work for it just like any other business. "Where's the beef!!!"
