It's kind of appropriate that attempting to register on engadget to reply there is totally creepy and unusable. I don't know when the first computer was built, but almost the first computer ever designed has recently been built. Babbage wasn't the first to think of the computer, but I think he was the first to draft one that could physically be built. His name comes up much more often than the "first" designer.
